I'm getting ready to do the deed.....
« on: June 14, 2011, 01:08:52 PM »
I found this board and I think it's great. I don't think there's a question I had about being bald that hasn't been answered here.

I just turned 47 and had noticed in the past few years some thinning on top, but nothing serious. I figured I had another ten years or so before I'd have to do anything about it. But recently someone took my photo from the top as I was bending down, and I saw the top of my head (not normally seen), and my scalp was showing through right there!  :-\ I was shocked, and since then I've paid more attention to what I have up there. I normally look at myself straight-on in the mirror, so don't notice as much, but it's really started falling out rapidly in the last year. I always told people that when it starts to go, I'm not going to carefully cultivate that last little patch of hair on top, nor resort to a funky comb-over for those who try and escape the inevitable.

Althought I don't have it with me (I'm at work), I managed to create a decent Photoshop image of myself completely bald, so I was able to get a visual of what's in store. I showed it to my wife and she basically said, "Don't you dare!" But I think that she'll understand once it's all gone, since I've brought up my hair loss to her often lately, and I know that she knows it bothers me and that a bald head is coming no matter what I do.

So - I'm preparing. I used to have a goatee and shaved it off, but I started (this morning) growing it back. It's going to be much grayer this time around, so I'm going to give it a week or so, then color it brown with Grecian Formula (to make myself look ten years younger, so they say). Once I have it in place, the hair will disappear. I'm not quite ready for a cueball look just yet, so I wanted to have something to set off my baldness - plus I like goatees. I'll post my normal picture, along with the Photoshopped one, as soon as I can.

Wish me luck!  O0

You sure do, Koz! :D

I echo what Koz said about the grey goat. Mine is kinda silver/white and it has never occurred to me to color it. Of course that's my opinion and you know what they say about opinions. I'm just not a fan of dye. I believe in being who I am, if someone can't accept that I don't need them.

Stunning has both positive and negative connotations, Koz!

Good Luck T7.

Good luck T7!  I love the goatee as well and mine has a bit of gray mixed in with my natural color, I've never thought of coloring it.  By the way, I'm also 47, at least for about 8 more days.   O0

Ok, here I am with hair (what's left of it), and another with me Photoshopped bald (and with a goatee, which I'm now growing out).

Welcome Tricon, I say do it now, and keep the goat natural. Be yourself.

I'm with the xnewyawka on this. Shave the head now and leave the goat natural.

I'm going shopping for a headblade after work. Gonna try Rite-Aid first, since I hear they carry them. Does anyone know how much they cost? Also, what lather is recommended for first-time use? I read the forum suggestions, but I kinda got information overload there. I'll use electric trimmers to get rid of the bulk, but there will be lots of fuzz left, so the Headblade will have its work cut out.

I inspected my hair this morning again after I dried it out of the shower. Sure enough, when I tilted my head down and looked up in the mirror, I could clearly see the writing on the wall - the entire area on top of the head is scary thin, while the "horseshoe" is thick. Time to be sly and beat it to the punch. Btw, like I said, I'm growing my goat out right now (this is the third day unshaven), and when I went down for breakfast this morning, my wife stopped and looked at me, giving me this what-do-you-think-you're-doing? look. I just grinned and told her I was I growing it back out - surprise (little does she know the surprises yet to come). She just shook her head in resignation. She thinks facial hair (except a moustache) is like kissing a cactus. So she oughta love kissing my up-coming bald head.
