New member going sly this Saturday
« on: April 28, 2011, 05:02:31 PM »
Hey fellas,

Long story short: I am shaving my head in two days after raising funds for St. Baldrick's.  While I have a thick head of hair, it grows like Kramer's - straight up and dorky.  So I am absolutely looking forward to Saturday.  As the purpose of shaving bald is to show solidarity with child cancer patients and raise awareness, I plan on staying sly for a while - maybe permanently!

My son was 5 when he was diagnosed with Leukemia (T-Cell ALL).  This weekend is his 7th birthday party, and he is doing well all things considered.  If things continue this way, he should finish treatment this coming Oct or Nov.  He went bald last winter, from about January through August.  He never wore a hat except for warmth.  I was going to shave then, but he thought it would be too scary.  Now his hair is back 95% and he is happy to hold the clippers this Saturday.

Just wanna say hello, and I look forward to stopping by here.  I'll post some pictures and stories of people's reactions.   Love the website so far - 20 minutes after being here!

The countdown begins. Welcome to SBG and all the best to your son. St. Baldrick's is a great organization.

Welcome Vinda-lou, good to have you join us at SBG's forum. That's a great reason to shave the dome, and on top of that, I think you'll like it. Good to hear about your son and his recovery.  O0

Thanks everyone for the welcome and good thoughts!

Set a $500 goal for St. B's, and have over $2000.00 so far!  So I did the deed Saturday between Sammy's 7th birthday party and a friend's belated Easter egg hunt.  Sammy and my older son Jack did the first couple of rows with the clippers and then my wife took over.  Then I hit the shower and went through the whole Headblade process for the first time (wash, scrub, shave, and the stinging Headclear).  The shower took 40 minutes!  I came out a new man.

Went to my friend's house, and he waved my car over to park in front of his house.  He didn't know it was me!  Said I looked like Joe Satriani.  Got very good reactions to the dome.  Been at work this whole week and everyone loves it.  I teach 5th grade, and the students thought it was very cool.  They couldn't take their eyes off my head the whole first day back.

I've since shaved two more times, and love the look.  My wife thinks it's better than she foresaw, but she looks forward to it growing back.  I honesty don't know when that will be!  I really like it this way.  So I might keep it sly for a while longer, and then "suggest" to her that it will be great for the summer.  And then maybe explain that autumn will be easier this way too!  We'll see.

For now, I love coming here to the sbg forums and reading a lot of posts and making a few of my own.  Tomorrow at school is an assembly called "Pennies for Patients" a fund raiser for Leukemia children.  My son is part of the assembly as is the grown son of friends of ours who went to the same school years ago.  He got leukemia when he was 12 - he's 17 now and considered cured.  So it should be great to see his and his mom's reaction to my shiny head!  All good things...

Thanks again for a great welcome.  Sorry for the ramble!

Outstanding Lou!

My bet is that you'll never grow it back. I wouldn't even if I could.

Congratulations and well done!

Regardless of what you end up doing, you now have another "style" of haircut that you're comfortable with. At least you have choices. ;)
