Seeking an electric razor. Plz recommend
« on: April 18, 2011, 03:56:01 PM »
First post on SBG and definitely not the last!

I intend to buy an electric shaver as it seems to be a cheaper option rather than going to the saloon/barber. Will be asking a friend who would be visiting US for a month in May 2011 to get this for me. Please recommend me some options on the following requirements-

* Pricing should be around USD 100 or less.
* I shave my head every 15 days. So the blades should last accordingly. Easy to procure some extra blades as well as I will be getting it in bulk from US(I'm based in India).
* I am partially balding. Don't know if this helps in the selection  :px

Thanks in anticipation. Cheers!

A cheaper electric Head shaver is by Conair called the Cleanhead. Designed just for head shaves. I have one and it works ok but you need to use it every couple days. It does also have a regular clipper cutter which could work for you every 15 days and then you switch that piece out for the headshaver attachment. About 30.00 USD. SImilar but newer is the Phillips Head Groom. Also a combo clipper with a headshaver attachment. I have not tried this one. ABout 50.00 USD.
I think your issue will be in only headshaving every 15 days. By then you will need a clipper first to buzz the hair short enough for these headshavers to then shave it down to skin if thats what you wanted. Or just try a Wahl Balding clippers or the smaller one called the Wahl Peanut. Both will clipper the hair down to a super short stubble that will be almost headshaved if thats the look your really want. About 50.00 to 100.00 USD.

Panasonic ES8243K. That's the one I have. I like it almost as much as a HeadBlade for the dome. And I'm sure that Panasonic has newer and even better ones on the market now.

I went with the Conair Cleanhead because I didn't want any cuts on the noggin.

It works great for me. Last couple of times I used the clippers with the shortest attachment since I have a full head of hair. It keeps it very close but not completly bald. The shaver head does do a very good job of keeping you bald if thats what you want.

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks.
After checking the website, i think i'll go with Conair Cleanhead. Panasonic does have a lot of products in their stable as one can see by clicking the link -
http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/shop/Personal-Healthcare/Men-s-Shavers.list.75125_11002_7000000000000005702

though too many products are getting me confused. Think Conair will be a good bet. How long will the blades last of i tend to use it once in a week? 6 mnths ? In this case, i should order for an extra set of blades as well.

Is it retailed anywhere at a price point less than USD 42.00?

I had the Conair Cleanhead.  While I do like it, it is not the best.  I would say it is ok for a quick touch-up inbetween regular shaves.  The one thing that I noticed with the Cleanhead is that your hair has to be really short inorder for it to work.  It won't cut anything with 15 days of growth on your head!  I don't think any electric will.

Last week I bought the Panasonic ES LA63s.  WOW!!!  This thing is absolutely awesome.  It is a little pricey but well worth it.  I can honestly say that if you shave against the grain with this you do not feel any stuble at all.  Just as close as a blade razor.  I would say the shave doesn't last as long as a blade shave but it get's just as close.  The other nice thing is that you can go over the same spot mutiple times without getting any irritation.  Don't get me wrong I love a nice blade shave but I had to switch because of skin irritation.  The nice thing about the panasonic is it's a wet/dry shaver and you can use it on your face and in the shower.  The shaver has a LCD screen on it that tells you battery life and time of shave.  This morning based on the timer I was able to shave my entire head and face in 8 minutes!  Not to bad.  This in only like the 5th time using it as well.  I should even be able to reduce that.  I been using shave secret shaving oill and a gillette shaving gel with it.

Anybody in the market for an electric razor try the Panasonic ES LA63s, you will not be disappointed.  I picked mine up at Target and they have a 90 day return policy if you don't like it. (Keep your receipt).

I've only used my Panasonic wet.  It is a very, very close shave.

I just got a Philips Headgroom and it seems to work better
than the Conair Cleanhead.

Another first time poster, I guess its taken me this long to realize that there are entire forums dedicated to this stuff!

I purchased a Wahl Designer many years ago when I decided that my defacto haircut would be a 4 on top and a 2 on the sides.. that was around 8 years ago.  Since then, I've lost more hair, and have gradually worked down to a shaved pate.

Now I have realized that I prefer the feel and look of about 4 or 5 days of growth.  My Designer only goes down to a guard-less 0.5, and I'd love to get an electric that will provide a similar length that I can maintain all the time.

I see a number of electrics that are suggested here.. do these go down to a zero or is that sort of number only reserved for trimmers like the Baldfader, which I heard doesn't actually even shave very closely?  Since you cannot return a trimmer due to hygiene reasons, I'd love to hear the general consensus of the closest shaver.. I'd be down with a cordless wet trimmer or shaver if it cuts closer.. I guess I prefer the Bruce Willis very close shaved pate than the smooth bald look.  My head is very soft, but also supple, and I love hats, but my head always feels like the hats stick to the skin without a bit of hair..

thanks in advance, aficionados!

Hi - I just ordered this one from the Premium store at Panasonic, so it's encouraging to read your post. I'm hoping it's "all that", as I'm tired of cuts and spending an hour in the shower trying to get the closest shave on my face and head possible, only to wind up with irritation and cuts.

I've had recommendations of the Gillette Fusion, etc., but they all seem like a money pit when it comes to cartridges, and I want to get a close shave each day without all the wasted time. I'm hoping this investment in the Panasonic isn't a waste of money - it was indeed pricey ( $150 ).

That said - do you mind if I ask what you paid for this at Target ?  I'm hoping I didn't get ripped off by buying it at the "Premium" store... ;-)

Thanks much,
John.

I paid $149.99 for The ESLA 63s at Target.  I think Amazon had it for like $132 but I didn't want to wait for it in the mail so I paid the extra $18 for it.  The other think I liked is Target has a 90 day return period.

Thanks for the informationon ht Panasonic ES LA63s. I will have to give one a try. I have always wondered how well they work. I seem to have a problme with bumps. Maybe this will help.

I do like a razor shave because it seems to bring aabout a closer shave.
