Newly sly and needing razor advice....
« on: April 14, 2011, 09:56:32 PM »
Hello gents. As the Subject says, I'm in need of some razor guru advice. On my face, I'm a DE wet-shaver...all the bells and whistles...but I've found my dome to be more of a no frills zone. My Gillette Super Speed simply cannot get the job done, and I admit it could be me not having the finesse to follow my melon's contours, but I opted for a new Schick Hydro 3 for head shaving. It's been over a week and I am working on the best setup to get that perfect shave. The Hydro does a decent job, but I was unable to get the back sides of my head just up and behind my ears with it properly. I was having great shaves on front, but only so-so around the back. Out of frustration yesterday, I grabbed an Old Spice twin blade disposable and gave it a pass on the area. To my astonishment, it grabbed the reluctant stubble with no problem. I tried it again today and now have had a truly slick shave for 2 days in a row. So that leads me to my problem..some would say they are frugal...but as for me, I'm just cheap :*))..so I'm not sure I'm willing to go with a disposable. I also am not going to keep paying 7.50 for Hydro 3's that take way too many passes to get the job done. So Sly guys....any advice on where to turn?

The Schick Xtreme3 disposables are pretty effective and affordable.

The Fusion cartridges last a long time and, if purchased in bulk, can justify the price.

And don't rule out the DE if you find the right blades to do the job.

Im quite new to sly aswell (8 days), i have shaved my face with a straight for a number of years now, 1 for the incredible closeness, 2 for the cost issues and 3 i love the whole ritual that goes along with it, wen im in hurry in mornings, like you i used my trusty DE which i now use on my noggin.

At first it took a lot of getting used to as like you said i couldnt get all the lumps and bumps of my noggin and didnt give me quite the close shave im used to getting on my face when using the same razor, so i decided to switch from my usual dovo blades (seem to struggle with thick hair on back of neck) to feather blades (a lot sharper and still only few cents each) and used bit of shaving oil under shave cream and for past 3 days ive been getting the closeness on my head that im used to getting on my face.

So maybe you such go to what your so familiar with, your DE and some decent blades to go along with it.

You may be right karmacopper...but I worry that the Super Speed is a little to passive to do the job. I may try my Gillette Tech with a fresh blade later today to see how it does. I'm currently using Personna blades, which work really well on my face, but I may need to grab a blade sampler from WCS or somewhere...thanks for the response.

I'll second Rob's endorsement of the Schick Extreme 3.   For a disposable they feel pretty good in your hand and the price isn't too bad - plus, and most importantly, they do a good job.  Another plus is that the blades have a bit of flex to them so they cover the occasional lump/bump of the head pretty well.  I've been using them for over a month and am yet to knick with them.

I've tried the Fusion and find the way the blade sits is great on the face but not good on th ehead.  And the price....

Which version of the SX3 do you all use?
Life has three aspects: Paradox, Humor, and Change.

Paradox: Life is a mystery; don't waste time figuring it out.
Humor: Keep a sense of humor, especially about yourself. It is a strength beyond all measure
Change: Know that nothing stays the same.

Funny thing ---I was in the local Bed, Bath and Beyond this morning exploring their shaving supplies.  There was a fellow there fussing with the shelves and he asked if I needed help. Told him I was just browsiing and he replied he was the rep from the Schick supplier, looked at the Sly head and said "maybe you've tried these but we're getting great feedback from guys who are head shaving...." and he hands me a package of the Extreme3's.  Told him I could be their spokesman since I'm already a user.....gee, I should have asked for coupons......

Thanks guys for the tip on the schick extreme 3 disposable razors. THey work great and are economical to use.

Rob6 from the looks of your picture it looks like they really do a great job of giving you a really close shave and a much closer shave than I am getting now. Your dome looks great.

I will have to go to Sams Club to pick some up.

Thanks again for the tip.

Joe

Thanks! Actually, I think that picture is the result of a Fusion, but I do get equally good results with the Schick Xtreme 3...even with the knock-off version at Wal-Mart, which are almost the same color green but made by Personna, I think.
