Antivirus AntiSpyware 2011
« on: March 28, 2011, 09:57:24 AM »
Has anyone ever heard of this program?  Somehow it got installed on my PC and it keeps warning me that it's finding Trojans and viruses and asking me to activate the program to remove them.  But when I run McAfee everything comes back clean.  The Antivirus Spyware 2011 notices look like they're coming from the Microsoft Security Center, but I'm very suspicious because I did not knowingly install this on my PC and when you try to cancel out of it, it doesn't seem to shut down.

Any idea how I can get rid of this thing?  I tried to uninstall it through the control panel but I got a notification saying I needed to get an uninstall key from the manufacturer after filling out a questionnaire to let them know why I'm uninstalling.  Naturally I'm reluctant to transmit any information to them.  Can anyone help??

The application is bogus and an attempt to con you out of some $$$.

Your best bet is to do a google search on "Antivirus and AntiSpyware 2011", and puruse a few of the results.  There will naturally be ads and such for various detection and removal tools, but buried in all of that there will be some procedures to kill certain processes and to delete certain registry settings and miscreant files.  I'm not comfortable in pointing you to exactly which procedure to follow, so my suggestion is to check out the google results and determine which course of action makes the most sense.

If you go to Kim Kommando's website, (she's the computer lady that is on the radio)they have a whole list of FREE anti-virus stuff there. I too got this exact same virus, and was able to get rid of it using Malwarebytes Anti Virus program, which is free. I actually had this virus on both my laptop and the desktop, and got rid of it on both. Now I scan both computers twice a month with Malwarebytes, Spybot & Ad-Aware. Those three don't conflict and sometimes they can find stuff that others may miss.

Actually, here's the page I dl'ed these programs from.

I noticed on that page they don't have a link for Malwarebytes anymore, there's still a free dl on their site.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Takes about 2 hours or so to do a complete scan & quarantine.

It's a scam Razor. Please download and use the previously suggested Malwarebytes. It's excellent and free.

I had something like that hit my company issued PC. It prevented me from running any .exe files (total pain). Had to reimage it.

I hate that kind of crap!

I had that one a few months ago.  It was expensive to get fixed.   >:(

I ran the Malwarebytes scan and it did not remove the program, but I think I was using an outdated version.  I just re-downloaded it and have another scan running now.

Success! The offending program has been removed.  I can't thank you guys enough; I was just about to bring my PC into the shop for what likely would have meant a few days without the PC and a hefty bill for cleaning it up.    Thanks again!

Very.  I hope there's a special place in hell for the people who create these viruses.
