Took the plunge
« on: March 19, 2011, 01:13:26 PM »
Wow!! Why did I keep finding excuses?? All that cliché-sounding stuff .... is true! I'm not repeating it again (it's been said more eloquently in many posts in the forum ... and Victor put it exceptionally well) but the experience is so much more. All the encounters I was dreading, I'm now looking forward to -- and it's going to be fun.

t3ase, I watched your video and enjoyed it very much - but the top, in the middle, is where I'm lacking. So decided to do it the other way around and first cleaned off where Mother Nature had started ... there's nothing like taking a peek in the crystal ball to see what future is heading your way. Took several pictures to remind myself what's in store should I ever think of changing my mind!

Having last had very short hair as a youngster, I first buzzed with 2, then 1, then with the guard off. All the time I was liking more and more what I was seeing.

I must admit that the time spent lurking paid off. I've always used a boar-bristle brush with gel - but a bit of aloe vera makes that a new experience. Did get a bit carried away with the razor, but was careful with the pressure - what I thought would be the tricky bits weren't a hassle at all.  Who first worked out the ice? It's brilliant!! (did that twice).

It's been very many years since I shaved with a mirror, so I'm quite used to finding my way around my face. Shaving my head was like getting to know a cousin I knew about but had never met. I was worried about the bumps and lumps, the scars and moles, profile, shadow, etc. But it's all me and I like it. Feeling a bit self-conscious about the ears though! Never thought hair could grow in so many directions - gave up trying to work out WTG or ATG, just aimed for smooth.

Gentlemen, you keep prodding at us lurkers to make the jump. But we vacillate, find new excuses, worry to the n-th degree about whatever. Thanks for not giving up, and for making this a great place to take the plunge.

Welcome, you truly have found the right place.  And as most of the guys with mpb will tell you, the only question and regret you'll probably have the day you "do the deed" is that you waited so long to do it.  Benefits will include looking more confident, and you'll act it; looking younger, and you'll feel it and being in control of your mpb, and you're almost there.
Told ya so ;D ;D ;D

An interesting morning (I'm in an earlier time-zone).

Today's lesson: don't sit in front of an open window ... it gets a bit draughty! But driving with the windows down is great!!

I was with a crowd of people I see on and off. Everyone was polite, and mostly said nothing (for once I had to initiate the small talk, and I'm usually hopeless at that!). The older guys didn't quite know where to look. The ladies giggled. The youngsters didn't bat an eye. The first comments: What wax do you use? and Are you incognito? Got my first head rub -- and she didn't even ask! ^-^  A senior colleague first had to ask someone if that was me, and then came over to chat.

I greeted an older woman, and she asked if I'd done it for her. Was puzzled for a moment, and then remembered she's been fighting cancer. By mid-morning the (few) comments were more relaxed - and I kept it fun with the replies. What was strange was to see how this unsettled some the guys my age and older - and their wives were extremely varied in their reactions!

Back at work on Tuesday, and looking forward to it. :D  Today's reactions were great and so unexpected, in spite of putting so much hard work into all the unnecessary worrying up until now!!  :-\

Thanks guys.

saintc: It was simply a matter of time (years, months, weeks ...??) - but your conversation with Coach7 made me sit up and think, and then buddha's contribution in that conversation earlier this week gave me the kick in the pants that said -- this is the weekend it happens!

Razor X: it's barely 30 hours, and I'm hooked.

mangosink: you're right, there is nothing like it. Woke up with head of fine sandpaper (which I liked), but after this morning's shower and shave I discovered that 'slick melon' is the right term - so different from a face shave.

Thanks.

Day 12 today. It's been a learning curve, but I like it more and more. A lot of meetings recently, and except for an occasional comment during greetings, I actually forget I'm sly -- the self-conciousness is gone!  :) Life goes on, but amazingly a lot has changed for me - and I'm glad for it.
