Too scrawny to shave?
« on: March 19, 2011, 03:58:44 PM »
Hi guys, I'm new to this site, the name's Josh. I'm 19, started balding on the entire top of my head at 16, went through the phase of denial, tried to grow out my hair, hair thickening shampoos, considered rogaine, people at church asking why I was going bald (as if I had the answer of made the decision...) and just simply pointing it out for the sake of pointing it out -__-, insecurity, etc etc... Well, I've come to terms with the fact that I'm going bald and I don't have a choice but to shave it, unless I wanna be rockin the horseshoe look my sophomore year in college in September >.< So, now it's a question of WHEN as opposed to IF. Reading a lot of stuff on this site helped me make my decision to shave eventually (: (or go sly? lol)

I plan on shaving it in the summer. I also read tips from other new sly guys that helped them. I'm a really humorous guy so I'm gonna have 2 of my friends shave my head and put it on facebook, and I'm going to correct everyone saying "hey Josh" to "hey Vin Diesel" (:

My one major super concern though...is my pencil neck. I just wanna know what you guys honestly think. Here are my pics, mugshot style lol (360 degrees)

I twinge when I even try to imagine myself shaved. Do you guys recommend I buff up my neck at the gym before I shave? Will I look strange if my neck isn't buffed up like Steve Austin? Pleeeeease be completely honest >.<

WOe is me >.<

I think I'm gonna nest in this site lol

Go ahead and shave, you'll look just fine.  If you want to go to the gym and bulk up, that's fine, but don't feel that you have to wait until you get to the size you want first.  There's nothing wrong with your neck and I'm not sure how you'd bulk that up, anyway.

Just go for it - you'll most probably be really happy with the outcome.  Don't wait, don't over analyze, don't over plan, and most importantly don't worry over it.  It's just a haircut - it's not a tattoo - it's not permanent.   Just do it .........and if you hate it'll grow out to a short buzz in no time

Dude, I thought the same thing. I'm a thinner build than most my age and worried as well.

Then I read all the "Just do it" posts here and did just that. Now I won't have it any other way. It's really THAT awesome.

No amount of analyzing, thinking, taking photos, photo manipulation, or asking others for their thoughts will ever push you over the edge. It may help get you closer or it may freak you out, as it seems it's doing here.

Simply DO IT!

You need to do it for you and nobody else.  Chances are when you're done with the 30 days you wouldn't give it up for the world and you'll wonder what the stress was all about.  BTW, there is no perfect shaped head, neck, shoulders, etc. for shaving the noggin.  It's what makes us all unique.  I've got a scar on my head from a dog bite when I was a little boy that I used to stress over before I shaved.  Nobody said anything and nobody cares.  Just shave it and enjoy!
Sucess is more permanent when principles are not compromised to achieve it.

My hair came off less than 12 hours ago. I like the new look at lot, even though I'm underweight for my height, and my pencil neck gets wrapped in scarves through the Winter. The good part is that I only have to look like me, not like other people's perceptions / expectations of me. (and that's a bit rich coming from me as I also fussed and worried over things that are absolutely not an issue now!).

I'll be getting people's reactions in the next few hours -- this is going to be an interesting day.  ;D

Go for it man!  I think it would be a great look for you.  "Pencil neck" is pretty harsh on yourself; you look to have an average build.  When you said "pencil neck" I envisioned something more like a lollipop, haha.

Exactly. That's what I was trying to get at in my post.. That's not "pencil," thats just "slender." I help a Network Ops crew at a hacking conference.. If you want to see "pencil neck" people, I'd be more than happy to show you. You are definitely NOT one.

Lots of EXCELLENT ADVICE here, Josh!!

Just GO FOR IT and DO THE DEED!!

You'll be sooooooooooooo glad you did!! It's a feeling of TOTAL FREEDOM and a BIG CONFIDENCE BOOST!!

BTW...pencil neck?? Naaaaah.... that's all in your head (pun intended)!!  :/O

You're as normal as the next guy...

 - Cap'n Noodles -

Look through the sectiion on HEAD SHAVING on the main forum page to learn the basics of head shaving BEFORE taking the plunge!

MOST IMPORTANT rule of thumb is to GO SLOW!! A sharp blade against your noggin is NOT something you want to rush through!! The more you take your time (until you get the hang of things) the BETTER YOUR RESULTS will be!!

Post up a pic when you complete the mission, so we can see a BEFORE and AFTER pic!!
You'll see...it'll be a HUGE POSITIVE DIFFERENCE!!
