Cleanhead - thoughts?

Gee I thought going to the bald side might save me a few bucks...but as with anything new there is the initial capital investment...boys and our toys.
I'm a shower shaver and will be traveling and sailing a bit in coming months. In order to keep things neat when away and give the dome an occasional break after a bad knick I just ordered a Conair Cleanhead on Amazon for 28 bucks - including free regular shipping.
It's not to replace using a blade but just to keep things neatened up when on the boat and away from adequate water, etc
Reviews on this seemed pretty good though there are a few design issues pointed out - but for the price it's worth having at hand.
Anyone have any thoughts ?

First time poster here....I had been cutting my "hair" with a trimmer & no guard before I got the Cleanhead this week. Friday I used it, and I can say that it works really well. This is the shortest my hair has ever been. I haven't shaved with a blade yet, don't know if I will, but this feels like my face if shaved
with
the grain. It's not stubbly, but it's not 100% slick all over either. It is on the sides and the back, but around the top of my head seems to get that sandpapery feel ealier then the rest of my dome. It's more something I can feel than see, because in the mirror all parts of my head look like a razor shave.
And I also got mine from an amazon seller for $28, and it got here in 3 days. It's a pretty great product so far, and I plan on using it daily and I think I will adjust to it even more and get better and faster results. I haven't had any irritation or anything, other than maybe some
slight
burining in the back. Not bad for never having used an electric before. I use the Bald Guyz gel on my head after a shave. Certainly, most definitely worth the $28! It comes with a bunch of attachments for different styles, but my hair was already too short for those to be of any use. I have a good set of barber clippers that I would use to get my hair down to a #1 every other day or so.
I thought I had a bottle of electric preshave stuff sitting around here somewhere and I wanted to give that a test....can't find it. Of course after I go buy some it will immediately be found.

This is much closer to a blade shave than any clippers I've used. My hair was as short as I could get it with the clippers, and I could immediately see a huge difference & it sounded like a lawnmower on my head---I can't feel any stubble except for two areas on the top/back of my head where whatever scraps of hair I had grew the thickest. Everything else is smooth.
I'm going to pick up some electric pre-shave stuff and try that out tomorrow. Also, I think my scalp needs to get used to the electric. It really does cut to the scalp---much better than what I had expected it to do for the price.

The Conair gives a great close shave. I enjoyed the slick feel so much that I began using the CleanHead twice a day. That was a mistake. After a few days, I developed a bad case of razor burn even though I used Williams Lectric Preshave.
For me once a day is all I can handle.

How does the pre-shave stuff work? I was meaning to try it, but the stuff I saw was $7, and I was already getting a close shave without it so I passed. yeah, once a day is what I do too, I did have some minor irritation on the back of my head/neck, but as I said, I've never shaved with an electric before, so it wasn't a surprise I'd have a bit of that here and there. Nothing major.
It's just crazy how fast the hair on your head grows back!

Just a note, if you try William's Lectric Shave make sure you clean the blades really well afterward. Williams has an oily consistency that will stay on the blade and keep hair and bacteria in contact with it. I don't know if the Cleanhead is wet/dry but if it can be immersed I recommend submerging the blades into a cup of HOT water with Dawn or another de-greaser type detergent mixed in and run the motor with the blades submerged. Give it 10 or 20 seconds to get all the gunk loose.
Somebody posted once that Williams and some of the other electric pre-shaves are corrosive if left on the blades. Yet another reason for cleaning every time you use it.
Gilette makes a pre-electric called "Afta" which is not as oily but uses some kind of powder in their formula. Once the lotion is applied you allow it to dry before shaving. If you run your hand over it you can feel the powder residue on your scalp.

I used William's Lectric Shave back when I shaved with an electric. I kept having to get it repaired. Guess what the problem was .... . The guy at the department store recommended rubbing alcohol instead.

my Cleanhead arrived last Saturday. I played with it a bit at that point and was pleased with the result. Have had some sort of a bug the last day or so and did not feel up to dealing with a blade yesterday. Was going to go without the daily slick down. But it was only Day #26 and I wasn't going to break the string, so I gave the machine its first real trial. I am still impressed with how well this thing works. It is not a blade close shave but it is better than I anticipated. Will I be giving up a blade in favor of the Headclean? No, but in certain settings it will be a great way to control the velcro; sailing/ travel when it's just not convenient/possible to use a blade, for a late day touch up when going out for an evening, to hit a missed/coarse spot mid day, etc.
To "quantify" the shave I got with it; most days I'm up showered/shaved by 7 00/30, so, using that point as my "cueball" hour, I'll say the Cleanhead results in an 11 am or noon result.
It feels smooth with the grain and like very fine (maybe 300 or 400 grit) sandpaper against the grain. It is tough to get behind the ears but I'm sure I'll figure out the right approach there after a few more uses.
I have not used any of the electric preshaves with it but have read that some of them (forget which ones) are better than others. Did read that plain old rubbing alchol works just about as well and I tried that.
My skin is relatively sensitive, after playing with this several times I have not had any signs of irritation though the scalp does feel a bit different post-shave.
In the end it's another tool to keep things looking good and sly.
Could the unit be sturdier with a simpler design for cleaning? Yes. But, given the price I paid on Amazon, for me, it's well worth the cost. For what it's worth this newbie Sly Guy gives the Conair Cleanhead both thumbs up.

Most that have tried the Clean Head agree with your assessment.

I've been using the Cleanhead and really like it. It's only been 5 days and I use it every morning and follow up with Thayers Witch Hazel. So far no irration.
I do clean mine everday just to be safe as I know my electric face shaver needs to kept clean. I'd also recommend it.

I haven't posted in here since forever, but I use a Cleanhead about once a week -usually on Sunday- as a break from the normal daily shave routine. (I gotta shave the noggin daily or it's stubble city) It's a little quicker and less messy, and while the results are not quite as good as a razor, they're pretty darn good for an electric. It's nice to have the option.

I have been using the Conair Cleanhead daily for the past 5 months. It gives me a closer shave than the Norelco I used previously. The Williams Lectric Shave I was using tended to gum up my shaver, so I poured the preshave into a larger bottle and mixed it with rubbing alcohol making a 1/2 preshave and 1/2 alcohol solution. The 1/2 & 1/2 solution makes the shaver glide moe easily over my head and does not gum up the shaver.

Got the Cleanhead deal for Father's Day. Tried it out last night. Worked pretty good. Should have "pre-trimmed" with the clippers first, but the Cleanhead handled the challenge well.
