Extending Blade Life--Possible Method
« on: December 13, 2010, 10:23:35 AM »
For what it's worth--there may be nothing in this method.  I certainly don't have enough data to yet say it's valid.  That said:

Now I have found that, just as with a case of wine in which you find "bottle variation" in the supposedly identical wine there, I have found "blade variation" in razors in the same boughten batch.  But one recent blade has had noticeably longer good use than average.  It might just be the blade, but I took to heart the mentions that one thing that prolongs blade life is keeping it dry.

Not needing (or having) a hair dryer anymore, I thought to myself, "How to dry the blade?"  I then said to myself, "There's a bottle of 91% isopropyl alcohol right here in the cabinet."  Also there was a rubber ear-syringe, never really used.  So I poured some of the rubbing alcohol into the cap of the bottle, sucked it up with the syringe, and dribbled it over the blade and the holder when finished the shave.  Then set the blade down in the little dish where it usually rests.

Alcohol of this strength picks up the water, and evaporates it quickly along with the alcohol, so both are quickly gone.  Maybe this has helped keep the edge, maybe not.  Once I've tried on a few more blades, I might be more ready to enorse the method.  But one thing for sure, the blade is certainly sterilized.

I'd be interested in your findings. Seems a much simpler method than a hair dryer, or in my case, blowing on the razor a bunch of times...

I use a combination of alcohol and baby oil on my razor, but can't say I compared it to a none treated razor. Will have to try it without for comparison.

I rinse my blade with the generic "sea breeze" astringent I use on my head after shaving... Been getting at least a week out of my M5 blades..
