The time has arrived?
« on: November 05, 2010, 07:20:34 AM »
Hi all!

I'm Miguel Santos, an 26 years old guy from Azores, Portugal.

Since my youth I knew I would loss my hair and get bald since it's a genetic condition in my family. While having hair, and knowing I would loss it I decided to take the most I could out of it... a lot of gel, have used spiked hair for a long time, dyed my hair and finally I decided to just let it grow until the time to shave it arrives. I never cared about hair treatments as it would only delay the problem, I choose to spent the money in something else.

Few months ago I notice on some photos that I was getting pretty bald at the back/top, skin color already. I still have some hair on top but they are really small in length and really tiny too... Now I just have long hair at the sides and back of my head.

Here some photos how it is looking:

Looking from front is ok, but when from back and side...
Giving a short cut to it I think it will look even worse, especially at the top…
So what do you thing guys? The time has arrived? I’m a little unsure about it :(

Cheers!
Miguel Santos

P.S: Sorry my rusty English!

As a general rule, if you're asking the question, then the answer is yes, the time has arrived.   Long hair with a thinning top isn't the best look for anyone, so go for it.  If you're not ready to shave with a blade, then buzz it as short as you feel comfortable.  It will look and feel a lot better.

Not correct. It may seem counter-intuitive, but longer hair makes thinning areas stick out much more than shorter hair.

Take Razor X's advice to heart.

Welcome Miguel.  First of all you've shown a lot of maturity facing your genetic predisposition to male pattern baldness.  Razor is right about shorter and that works nicely subject only to having a relatively symmetrical hairline, so that may be an interim step that can work for you if you're not completely comfortable going sly right now.  But, another way to think of it is that you can do the buzz and from time to time try out sly.  It will only take a week or so to grow out to a very visible short buzz.  So, if your schedule and commitments work, try sly, try buzz.  See what works for you because when it comes down to it, all of this is about feeling good about yourself and appearance and being in control of it and not letting anyone, friends, family, work colleagues, make you a "victim" of it.

Hi guys!

Thank you very much for your opinions.

I know my hair doesn't look good anymore, that's why now I'm considering that it's finally time to "embrace my destiny" eheh

The thing about a shorter hair is that it will not make my baldness disappear or at least mask it enough, especially on the back top (I don’t know the name of that part where I’m really bald, any clue? Hehe) where the baldness is very well visible.

I think I will wait 2 weeks or so, which is when I will be on holidays. Having a baldness and moving to sly isn’t a problem because during those years I have been preparing myself to that, I knew the time would come, but now the time has come and I’m hanging in the balance… I think I need someone to cut my hair (or what is left) while I’m asleep hehe… but yeah, I will do it, I just need to find some extra motivation to move on… maybe buying the headblade in advance would help eheh

Saintc, I’m fighting to be in control, I know my girlfriend really don’t want me to shave it nor my parents, but they’re making an effort to understand my situation, none of them live with this problem 24/7 except my father, he usually cuts his hair buzz 1 and 2 but for me he looks much better when he goes buzz 0

By the way, looking at the Norwood scale I’m around V, right?

Cheers!
Miguel Santos
