All Grain Brewing
« on: September 20, 2010, 06:50:42 PM »
I've got 5 gallons of Irish Ale fermenting as I write this.  I recently switched from extracts to all grain. For those experimenting with extracts, make the switch to all grain and you won't be dissapointed.

Anyone else brew their own beer?

No. Don't drink beer. Not even someone else's. Make wine though.

I went to a wine making class a couple of weeks ago. It was an extract class, which is fine. I'd like to learn to make it from actual fruit though. Maybe start with a simple strawberry. Right now, beer is more my speed. It's probably because I have easier access to "how to" beer info and not such much luck with "how to" wine info.

Hey BBQ Guy.
I'm also a member of the brewing community.  A buddy and I have been brewing 5 gallon batches using extract for about a year.  We've done them about once a month.  We've done alot of pale ales (an IPA), a hefeweizen (probably our best batch), brown ale, honey wheat, a guiness style brew, a black porter and others to delicious results.
We'd love to do a lager at some point but lack the ability to temperature control a batch that big.

Which method do you use in All-grain.  We want to switch to all-grain and have been looking at sites and youtube "how to's" and asking buddies about it.
From what I understand there are different ways to do it.

Thanks and I raise a glass to ya!

If you Google "make a mash tun from a 10 gallon Igloo cooler" you'll find several suggestions for making a single step infusion mash tun. It's pretty simple. If I can make it, anyone can. Here's some instructions if you're interested: http://www.homebrewtalk.com/wiki/index.php/Converting_a_cooler_to_a_mash_tun#Cylindrical

You really need 10 gallons if you plan to make 5 gallon all grain batches. 9-10 lbs of grain and 4 gallons or so of water fills up the 10 gallon cooler pretty quick.

I've got an Irish Red Ale fermenting this week.

I used to be a member of the local homebrew society when we lived in Boston.  The neat thing about that was that we'd often have meetings at the Sam Adams Brewery.  I am in the process of checking out the local homebrew society here in North Idaho.  So, I will most likely get rolling with that again.  I have only used kits in the past, so will probably start back up with one of those.

I enjoy drinking beer quite a bit, never tried to brew it though. I've thought about trying it, but lack the space right now.
