27 nearing 28 and I think it is time...
« on: August 28, 2010, 07:01:49 PM »
Hi Folks,

A little introduction.

I am 27 going on 28 in November. I started off receding at about 19/20, to begin it was the front and not too much and I was ok with it. Roll on a few years later when I was 23, a friend said to me under a bright light ''You've got a bald spot'' noticing my back area.
Then inbetween, it fairly advanced a bit - mostly thinning out and further receding at the front.

So, I got a bit depressed and scoured the Internet and up to very recently I was using concealers to hide my hairloss, but it was such a nightmare having to do that routine every day, and I think I got gready sticking it on my front hairline etc and probably looking so stupid.
So again I got further depressed, and I looked at a Wig/Hair System whatever it's called.. and got fitted for one and had it put on...
from a distance yes, it looked great, but the glue, the build up, the paranoia! First time I went to meet one of my friends (we were due to go out on the Town) I got so nervous over it I had to go home as I felt really unwell, that day (one day after it being fitted) I started touching it and looking in the mirror and just took it off (that day was TODAY!)

So as I type - I have a half bald dome!I look like a grandfather with hair sticking out the sides haha, but  the bit where I stuck the rat on earlier is shaved to a 1, but it's still quite thin so I'm thinking when I do go for the big shave (Tomorrow) I've got clippers I'll maybe ty and give it a full zero all over....
I have dark hair (or had dark hair ;) I'm hoping I can look a bit like this cool dude
http://jesper.nu/em_2008/spelare/images/daniel_majstorovic.jpg
I have similar eyebrows, although blue eyes, and similar shaped head, and decent facial hair which is dark,
although I'm quite pale at the moment.
Does anyone use fake tan? or spray on tan?

Loads of thoughts are going through my head.. if this is right to do, but what else do I have? I'd love to have a full set of my own hair.. but I don't.. it's thinning and thinning fast.  I've lost a lot of weight over the past 2 years (60pounds) and reasonably in shape.
As soon as I had the wig fitted, I realised it wasn't for me. The patience, the thought of it popping off doing sports etc (which I do a lot - run 6 times a week) and it's fake at the end of the day.
My Girlfriend who is awesome, we've been in a long distance relationship for 6months, and I've not told her about the wig, She's coming to live with me on Monday! She'll be fine with the baldhead, I'm sure of that... she's supercool, but to look into a wig etc without telling her I feel almost like a betryal to her..

I'm going on and on.. sorry! but it's nice to talk haha, to folk who understand a bit.

BUT, It's got to go!

It was at the stage (my hair) of looking really awful very thin and receding to a v-shape even more like a T (if you can imagine the I-was my front, and T where my hair was).

Sorry for this being me me me! but I'm excited, nervous and excited all at once...
I keep looking in the mirror and covering up the bit where the hair is and I think it might look ok on me being bald, I look awful right now with that hair on the sides.

Last Question is, How did you guys or what did you guys to do to begin with for the white bald bit that'll appear from where you hair was or when you wore hats?
Did you put some gradual tan lotion on it?

Ok, thanks for reading folks.. sorry if this is muddled and all over the place, but I feel quite liberated (well halfways I do... I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow)
Now, to tell the folks, work mates, and friends who all seen me last with chalk in my hair and now will see me with with nothing. My Girlfriend hasn't seen me since July, and I'll explain everything about how nervous etc..

right, sorry this is very 'me me me' so i'll go now, but cheers and thanks for such a great site. so much info and help and just great to read stories and see pics..

take care,

Kevin

Kevin...first, a big welcome and we all know where you are right now.  This is a great site for folks wondering what to do about hair loss!  Go SLY and let the world turn, man.  Is it that easy???  YES.  Get rid of the hair, or lack of, and get rid of the problem you face everyday regarding "hair'....Shave it down and DO NOT MAKE LIFE harder than it needs to be.  Simple enough.  You are facing a tough decision---not the whole world---just you, regarding your hair.  The rest of the world could really care less.  It IS this easy.  If you shave tonight, I promise the sun will come up tomorrow, kids will still eat ice cream, and my ex wife will still be "mean as a snake'.....What I mean is, it is easier than you think....Life will be awesome in regards to the hair ordeal.

I just let mine tan gradually....get some good head protection--sun screen, sun block, hat....and rock on, man.  It is soooo easy getting ready to go out with my lovely wife now and just shining that pretty dome up and putting on the best duds and walking around with that beautiful woman on my arm....NO MORE placing the hair and hoping for no wind, rain, or eclipse happening.  It is  a  really easy thing to do, man.....and quite a nice change to your life!!

First off good choice on losing the rug. Some people like shave heads some do not but noone respects a toupee. Especially if your active what a nightmare that would be. Shave your head  give it about two weeks until people are used to it and most quit commenting about it. I have three friends with full heads of hair who buzz it to a zero without a guard. Pretty socially acceptable these days. Good luck

Here's my suggestion.  Buzz it down with your clippers this week, down to at least a one if not no guard.  Then Friday, before the three day weekend, take it sly.  You get everyone you know used to the change in your silhouette, including you, and then when you wet shave it Friday night, you have three days to get some color up there and the people you see every day probably won't notice all that much because you've already got them over the hard part.

Welcome Kevin....glad you made the right choice. And if you really want to be sure you made the right choice.....after shaving....put the wig back on and greet your girlfriend that way when she arrives.  After a few minutes....pull it off and watch the relief on her face.  O0     Then you will know for sure and you guys can have a laugh and you can tell her the whole story about the wig.

i hear ya Kevin my women misses my hair but she is loving the dome. i love having her run her hand over my grape just after removal of what i have. at first you get some looks and questions shrug em off. you will be surprised how open to slyness everyone is. tell strangers your a marine if you want it tends to answer all the questions in one go. :D just be polite and respectful and the rest wont matter in all seriousness

Welcome Kevin!
Good you've made up your mind. I'm sure you will look good and feel much better.
And since you have dark hair it will actually outperform the pale skin. Don't worry. :)

Kevin, you've got good instincts, follow them.  And, don't just buzz to a zero, finish the job with your razor--take your time, shower, etc., but clean it to the bone.  You'll never regret the decision.

Hi Kevin, welcome to the forum.

Im the same age as you with dark hair etc. My trick is to make sure you go outside as often as possible if you want a tan. Im from Denmark and the weather is rather bad all year long. I just go for walks when the sun is out even if its just for a brief moment.

And just shave it and see what you think. If you dont like just grow whatever you have back. I shaved when I started losing my hair and im glad I did.

Hi Folks,

Many thanks for the replies.  It's 1pm here, I'm from Scotland and I'm about to shave the rest off (I've got folk round at the House who seem to be staying for Hours!! I'm wanting them to go so I can do this, so I sit with hat on and hair at the sides haha. I'll try get some pics up as well on here...

I feel bad even going for a piece, but even after not even 12hrs of it I knew it wasn't for me and it's fake.. the hairwearers will say 'If you have a broken tooth etc you get dentures' etc but it's got so many scenarios, the upkeep, the constant checking, what if the Glue starts coming off etc? I feel bad that I didn't just embrace the look when I started to recede.
I was meant to go out last night, but I felt unwell - I'm sure it was due to my being nervous about being seen with the hair on etc.. Today, I feel great and plan to make up for lost last night and go out with the same pal and then going into Work on the Monday - Hungover and Bald!

Cheers folks again, great hering your welcomes and advice..

Will keep you allposted

Well #1, there aren't that many piece bearers these days, the business is way down; and #2 teeth are an essential part of our bodies, and if the natural teeth go, well most people opt for dentures to be able to eat relatively naturally.  Hair, nope, not essential for anything really.  It's cosmetic at best, and every guy looks fine without it--without all of it, IMO.
Enjoy the shave, live free.  Right choice.
