The Differences Between Shampoo, Soap and Body Wash by
Bald GuyzMany people do not know the differences between soap, body wash and shampoo and how they affect the sensitive skin of the head and face. They are often quite similar, but they do have many differences.
Bar soap was created back in 2800 BC in Ancient Babylon to wash the stones for the servant girls. Soaps are created by treating vegetable or animal oils and fats with a strong alkaline solution, usually lye. This solution breaks down the fats, making crude soap. Usually solid fats, like coconut oil, palm oil, tallow or lard, are used to make hard soaps that resist dissolving in water. Olive oil, soybean oil or canola oil make softer soaps. Other ingredients include dyes, perfumes and sodium tallowate and sodium cocoate, which are the results of reacting the fats with the lye. Glycerine enhances the texture and titanium dioxide makes the soap opaque.
Body washes are typically in a gel form and make more foam than bar soap, which appeals to many people. It is also extremely easy to apply. Soap can seem old-fashioned to the younger, hipper generation, and this is also why you will find body washes in colorful, sleek containers with varied fragrances and colors. Some soap tends to dry out the skin, as its surfactants are designed to remove all oil and dirt. This is also a problem with some body washes.
Shampoos and body washes are often quite similar, actually. However, there are some differences between the two, mostly in the detergents used. Since shampoos are for hair, some have harsher detergents, or surfactants, than ones found in body washes. There can also be differences in the conditioning ingredients. For this reason, some shampoos do not feel good on the skin.
Shampoos were created because hair became too rough and damaged when soap was used to wash hair. However, both shampoo and soap use surfactants as the main compound to remove dirt. The problem with using shampoo on the body is that some ingredients in shampoo are not needed for skin and it could give off a slimy feel. Shampoos are made for specific hair conditions such as dry, oily, color treated, frizzy etc. Each function uses different ingredients designed for hair and not skin. Many bald guys, when questioned said they use whatever shampoo is in the shower.
So why would a man with no hair want to use a shampoo for color treated oily hair to clean his skin?
This is why we developed
