My First 30 Days
« on: August 21, 2010, 10:38:06 PM »
Just thought I would share my first experience at being Sly. I took the plunge on a whim. My wife and daughter spent the night at a friends house and it was my fir1st day on vacation. I looked in the mirror and just took my electric shaver and when right down the middle of my head. No turning back now. They came home that afternoon and thought I had gone crazy, but for the most part they were supportive. Even though I kept my hair cut pretty short, my dome was quite pale (it's all relative because I am a brown skinned African American). I had a week to get lots of sun before returning to work. I continued to shave daily with my Braun electric. All was ok except a few pimples on the back of my neck. I have never shaved with a blade before, always electric. After research, I decided to take the plunge and use a Headblade. What happened the first time using it. I shaved a large slice of my brown skin off with that contraption! My dome was like Old Faithful! It took several minutes for the bleeding to stop. Great, now I have a big whie streak on my bald scalp. After a few days it started to look strange and I thought it was infected. I had a doctor appt any way, so I had him look at it and he said it wasn't infected and I should be able to shave over it now. So now I buy a Gillette Fusion Pro Glide Power. It was great. What haopened next? A G_d Damn mosquito bit me right on top of my dome next to the healing gash from before. The bite swole up and looked like a golfball on my head. When I shaved I accidentally went over the bump and a small scab formed. So I skipped shaving for about 4 days. When I resumed shaving, the back of my head/neck had pimples that were itchy. I tried several things over the next several days, including taking Benadryl. I thought the area might be infected (yeah, I guess I am a bit obsessed with infections) so I put some Neosporin on the area. This morning the back of my neck is swolllen nd feels warm. So I have been putting an ice pack on it periodically. Even though the first 30 days have been problematic, I am going to remain Sly forever

WOW!!  Hopefully it will be smooth sailing from here on out.  If/when you try the headblade again......slow and smooth is the key. Get going to fast and you are asking for trouble.   Welcome to the forum!!

if you are not already doing so in your scrape routine i suggest a daily scrub exfoliate followed up by a hot towel followed by oil like King of shaves followed by a good lather.

the trick with the head blade is slow and steady till your head is used to it also rinse often check for clogs in the blades. after shave i use an ice cube or really cold water followed by peroxide or witch hazel to close the pores and then it is the skin care products mositurez and the like.

you may also need to take into consideration your ethic background when using products i have a friend who does not use any of the so called sensitive skin stuff like i use if he did he would break out. those bumps could be any number of things i suggest a dermatologists

Oh and Welcome to SBG1

Sounds like you have had a time, brother!!!  More like a quest.  You will get the hang of the shave....I promise you.  Gotta let the dome have time to adjust to the shaving, also.  Happy you are going to hang in there, dude!!  It is worth it being SLY! O0

Man, I feel your pain.  Just went through an episode with the bumps on the neck.  The Dermatologist gave we samples of a cream, Ultravate.  Within two days the itching is gone and the bumps have all but disappeared.  Try it, you'll like it!! O0

My first experience with the Headblade Original was EXACTLY the same.  Never did get that one figured out.  Carved a few swathes before I gave up.  The Headblade Sport?  I LOVE that gadget.  Shaves me baby-butt smooth with no irritation.  But ya gotta find what works for your noggin.  For me, the shaving is enjoyable.  Otherwise, why bother?

Sounds like you had a bit of a rough patch when you started. Like all the new things it takes practice, I find regular razors to be more forgiving than the headblade. If you keep using the headblade know that slow and steady does the trick.
The reason people find it so hard to be happy is that they always see the Past better than it was,
the Present worse than it is & the future less resolved than it will be.

All is good now. Back of neck is clear, mosquito bite is gone, slice on head has disappeared! I have gotten my shaving routine down to about 10 minutes. Settling in on favorite products. Gillette Fusion ProGlide Power razor, Barcs Cuttin Up Shave Cream,  Witch Hazel, Bump Patrol for back of neck and Sharps Bald Head Balm all over. And to answer someone's comment, I will definitely not try the killer Headblade again.
