What would you do if ????

You had your female dog that was in heat put in your shop and the neighbor's three male dogs chewed through the 2"x6"'s around your door and got with your dog?

I love everything outdoors and that makes for a lot of hunting. I have a 5 year old female fiest that is the best squirrel dog I have had in my adult lifetime. Had big plans to breed to the best male in my area. Well, plans are busted. I live in a rural area and have been here my whole life. The neighbor's have been here since 1986 and I have always got along with them really well. Mr. Neighbor is very sorry but Mrs. Neighbor could care less. Refused to put dogs up. We have a County Animal Conrtol Officer that is completely useless. Will not enforce any actions.

I will not only be out repairing my shop but also the cost of the Vet to abort this pregnancy and waiting for her next cycle to get my pups.

I know what I intend to do but what would you do knowing that you could not get any help from authorities?

Take the neighbor with the 3 dogs to small claims court, make sure you get evidence of the damage done, this is technically a civil matter and the local authorities should have done a report, you have the option of going to the police ask if they have any damage reports that you can fill out as well.....rural town or not there are laws and it sounds to me that there just lazy and the other question is your town have a city police or county ?

The other option is putting the dogs down.

It is County Police not City. I am aware of the Laws and actually printed them out earlier this afternoon.

I would like to try and resolve this as peacefully as possible being neighbors and all but sometimes that just can't be done.

I'm thinking you have ESP after reading your last option....

If the neighbor couldn't care less, I think you need to give her something to care about!  I'm with Ryan... time to go to Court!  

You have sustained substantial monetary loss and are entitled under the law to seek compensation.

i have to agree with the other Sly's here whos to say that those dogs wont get to her again next cycle. go to Court hit there pocket other wise there are other options that i am sure your are aware of.

Remember one thing.... this is not the dogs' fault. They are only dogs and they did what dogs do. So do NOT take it out on the dogs.
The owners are fully responsible and must be held accountable. I would talk to them about being compensated for repairs and other associated costs from the incident. Maybe they'll do the right thing but I'm guessing they will not.
Then legal recourse is your only lawful action.

Make sure an Incident Report is on file with local law enforcement and don't start a tit for tat scenario. That is a two edged sword and your dog could get involved. If you know what I mean.

I agree with the others who have responded so far. Obtain a police report, document the damage with pictures, save all your receipts and tell your neighbors that you hope they take responsibilty for their dogs. The value of good neighbors is a two way street. If they don't step up and pay you for your loss they obviously don't put as much stock in the "being a good neighbor" as you do. If they refuse to help, take them to small claims court.

They called last night and told me that they had put their dogs up. I went out this morning and guess what I found ? Three male dogs trying to find access to my female. I was a little fragile to start with from yesterday morning and this finished me off. I called local authorities again and requested a report as you guys have suggested. I had already taken photo's of all the damage. I went to his house and asked if he wanted to use a conrtactor of his choice or mine. I could fix this myself but I'm thinking that if it hurts the wallet, things may change a little. He said he would pay for the materials and help me do the repairs. That would be cool with me if he will follow through with it but I don't expect that this will be over anytime soon.

Koz, You're right. I can't blame the dogs but it it awful hard to contain myself.

Might also suggest that if they intend to continue to let their dogs roam.....have them neutered.  Sounds like Mr. Neighbor is trying to be decent about it...and if he is willing to help with repairs,  take that time to talk with him. Let him know your plans on breeding your dog and how that has been sidetracked by his negligence. Lord knows what kind of crap he has to deal with at home with Mrs. Neighbor, so if you can get him on your side...the easier it will be to deal with the situation.  Frustrating now....but living next to someone you can't stand will be frustrating for as long as you live there.
