newbie question about how much pressure to use
« on: July 23, 2010, 03:47:07 PM »
So ive taken the plunge into shaving my dome. I have a headblade and so far things are going well. When i shave wtg i have no burn, but of course its not bbs. Ive tried going atg but when i do the headblade almost seems to get stuck. I have plenty of lube and am thinking i might not be using enough pressure. Any tips or tricks?

Right now Im scrubbing, wtg, xtg and occassionally atg. I am using kos shave gel cause ive found that stuff to be the slickest.

Good rule of thumb is use enough momentum but at the same time do not push down, the position of the HB and the blades are designed to make contact without any compromise of quality of shave and nicking. It takes practice at first, in regards to it getting stuck it's numerous things, the type of hair you have, not applying enough hot water and using and exfoliator and so forth....I use the doubleblades and they eliminate alot of that stoppage that could occur.

Perhaps you should try different blades with the HB. I'm getting a good shave ATG with the HB triples but now I am using double blades from Wilkinson (Schick) because shaving is easier with less resistance.

I think i might try some double blades vs the triples. Ive read on many posts that people have better results. I also saw some thermal exfoliating scrub from gilette. Supposedly it helps to soften your hairs making it easier to go atg. Thanks for the help.

Just use the momentum of the shave to provide the pressure. You do/should not need to push down onto your head. Just pretent like you are rubbing your hand over your head -

I try not to use too much pressure. Just like stroking your head. Wash first with soap/cleanser and hot water. Proraso pre-shave cream is a good primer, then the shave cream/gel of choice. Slow and steady with long smooth strokes WTG then ATG works best for me. No stubble when I'm done.

No pressure on the blades.

I use HB-double blades, I find they shave better than tripples.

It's a learning curve. Best wishes O0.

Right now Im scrubbing, wtg, xtg and occassionally atg. I am using kos shave gel cause ive found that stuff to be the slickest.

What's "bbs"?
We could really use a head shaving glossary here, BTW..   ;)
So far, I'm familiar with WTG, ATG, XTG, BBC, and BBN....

Anyhoo..  Here's my trick that helps in the back.  While most guys shave first going WTF to get the stubble as short as possible before going ATG, I use an electric razor - the Conair Cleanhead, to be specific. It gets really close, but, I find that there is still definitely stubble there to get rid of when I follow it up with a blade ATG. It's just that the electric shaves a little closer than for me a blade going WTG. (But not ATG of course) Since I have to dance around a bunch of old transplant scars on the back of my noggin, I find this works best for me. Actually, I still prefer a regular razor for the very back and sides; but the HB works phenomenally well across the top and upper back, but again, that's because of my unique "landscape", which includes not only scars galore, but strong ridges and valleys as well. I got a knobby knoggin! (Hey, maybe that should've been my username here)

You don't need to apply any pressure on a HB, just imagine you're wiping your fingertips across your scalp, but s-l-o-w-l-y.  You'll get the feel of it in no time.  Also, keep the HB "level", where the wheels (if you use the sport model) or the back (if the regular model) are always in contact with your skin. The rear should never lift up. But neither should you ever bear down on it, either.
Smooth, even,  and slow wins the ...errr.. race.. and you'll be buttery smooth and nick free.

Lastly, keeping the skin a bit taught will help as well, I think this is particularly applicable to the back of the head.
Hair today.. gone tomorrow!  (sorry)

If you use to much pressure you may get a bbs, baboon butt smooth. A baboon butt smooth shave fells like a baby butt smooth shave, but your noggin will be all red and stuff, lol.    :*))

So long as you don't get hemorrhoids on your head!  lol

Personally I like to bear down 'til I see just a little blood, then I know I'm getting nice and close, then I bear down just a little harder still to remove that troublesome outer layer of skin that the stubble is hiding in!

It's like peeling an apple.

Yes I'm kidding!!!!!  >:D

Now we know why you have odd dips and valleys! Has nothing to do with hair transplants. :)

You really don't want any pressure at all when using the headblade as this cud cause a nice gash in your head. Just go nice and slow until you get the hang of it, and after that you can speed it up.
The reason people find it so hard to be happy is that they always see the Past better than it was,
the Present worse than it is & the future less resolved than it will be.

Well,  when I speak of valleys and ridges, they have nothing to do with the transplants,  that's just my freaky skull.  O:O
The scars, however.. oh yeah.. transplants.  Yet another bunch of uneven skin to worry about!   I think they're getting slightly better now though, with exposure, regular shaving, and Mederma.
Sometimes I wanna take a belt sander to my head!
