I, too, watched the entire series while it was on tv. It disturbed me to see how his character degenerated as time went on. By the end I found myself really not liking him at all. I actually found the way he betrayed his last partner from the unit as totally repugnant. His character went from heroic in the beginning down a continuum to basically being a worthless a$$hole and scumbag by the time he got his federal appointment. When he took his gun out of the desk and left the office in the last episode I was actually hoping that he would end up killing himself out of shame for all that he had done.

Ahh i was also very disapointed with how he betrayed Ronnie in the final chapter, and yes by that point there really wasn't a whole lot to like about his character.
But funny enough i was still hoping he would come out on top. Maybe because throughout the series he had shown such passion and determination to achieve everything he had worked towards? In that final scene where he is sitting alone in the office, i thought it would end there, defeated. empty. alone. So i couldn't have been much happier when he went for his gun and marched off the screen, looking as determined as ever! lol.

I also just finished watching this series. Mackey deserves a bad an ending as any human could get. He lost his family and job, betrayed his "friends" and walked off alone into the night.
.....the quiet brightness of the city disconcerts. Somewhere malfeasance percolates. There is work to be done.
