Schick Hydro 5-vs-Gillette ProGlide Power.
« on: June 02, 2010, 07:24:48 AM »
Good morning my fellow Sly Bald Brothers,

About two weeks ago I reluctantly purchased the New Shick Hydro 5 razor, I say reluctantly because some of you may remember me saying that I hate Shick razors. My reason for hating the Shick razors stems from when they started putting those little wires in front of the blades, although I understand their reasons for doing so, it made the blades impossible to rince clean for each pass, resulting in a badly cloged razor.

Now for the New Hydro 5, the reason I decided try this razor is because number one I am a sucker for new things, number two they got rid of those stupid wires that go over the blades. I was realy quite surprised, it gave me a very close shave with little effort and most important to me no irritation!! The only thing that I was not impressed with was the bulkyness of the head and the trimmer blade didn't seem to work well for me, but honestly I never realy use the trimmer blade any way, so from me 4 out of 5 stars!!

I purchased my Schick Hydro 5 at Shoppers Drugmart: For the Handle and one cartridge it retailed for $8.99 CAD a pack of four replacement cartriges was $12.99CAD.

Now for the New Gillette ProGlide Power, this razor boasts a new erganomically designed handle (for better controll) New thinner blades with a special coating to make them glide accross your face causing less irritation and new blade stabilizers, to help maintain contact with the skin for a closer shave, as well as a few other cosmettic new features. I bought this razor last night and tried it for the first  time this morning, and I have to say,,, I for one am NOT impressed, I was happier with the Fusion razor. Although I did not have any irritation, I think it is because the blades didn't do much cutting, I am not sure if this is because of this new coating on the blades or the new blade stabilizers, but in any case this razer was a huge disapointment for me, and I am a BIG Gillette fan!! I actuallu had to complete my shave by pulling out the Shick Hydro 5.

Now for the price for the ProGlide, I purchased this razor at the same Shoppers Drugmart: Again I purchased the Power version and for the New handle with one cartridge it was $18.99 and $16.99 for the NON power version, as for the  four pack of replacement blades again the Power versions are $24.99 yep that was $24.99 for only a four pack, the NON power price for a pack of four cartriges were $22.99. Now both the Power and Non Power replacement cartriges came with a sample of their new facial scrub,(which I never tried) I am not sure if that sample contributed to the outlandish price for the blades but I suspect not!. I give the Gillette ProGlide a rating of 1/2 out of 5 stars ( I just like the Power Handle) which the Shick does not have.

So if any of my Sly Bald Brothers would like to try the Gillette ProGlige razor please PM me and I will gladly ship you my slightly used (only once) handle along with a new never used pack of four replacement cartriges absolutly free!!

I got the free Gillette Proglide Power in the mail... and I was not impressed either... I don't love the power razors anyway, but I did not see any improvement over the Fusion.... I kept the free battery though, the razor is in the trash. I went and bought some more Headblade stuff instead.

I'm waiting on my freebie to come in the mail.  I'll tell you that my expectations aren't very high.  I thought the original Fusion stunk.  The M5 is just as good and a third the price to use.  I still use my Mach3 and the Sensor3's in my Headblade.  I always hated Schick products.  Their blades didn't seem to be as sharp as the Gillette ones.  I think they all have been on a steady decline since the Mach3. Just add another blade seemed to be their answer for a few years.  I can't get into the tight places with all those bulky heads. :-\

I'm starting to think that the pendulum is swinging into Schick's favor.  I'm about to the point that I'm going to get a Hydro pretty soon.

You know it's funny you say that.  I was actually contemplating getting a Sly Care Package together and doing a PIF for a new member.  Not that your new, but it made me think.

Got my ProGlide in the mail today.  I'm going to try it out and let you know what I think.  It is a power handle.  Looks like a marital aid.  Never have figured out the need of of a vibrating razor.

Well that sucked  ???  I thought the Fusion was awful.  I had to scrape my head about 5 times to knock all the stubble down.  It was only one day growth  :o  And it still didn't come all the way smooth.  Don't waste your money.  I declare the Hydro the winner and I haven't tried it yet.  What happened to Gillette?  :-[

Tom,

Thanks for the review... I almost bought the new Gillette but I think I'll just save my loot for something else!  O0

Just gave my last Fusion and extra blades to my 16 year old son -- The Hydro 5 is much better for my style of shaving and head shape.

Will the hydro 5 blades fit on the hydro3 handle? I didn't care for the hydro3 but I am kinda interested in trying the hydo5. I think the fusion has me spoiled, I like the 5 blades.although I'm not crazy about the new proglide, it doesn't seem to get as close as the original.
