Anti-Virus--what's the the best for general home use????
« on: May 29, 2010, 01:47:54 PM »
Well, my wife didn't send the new machine back.  And today I've got it up and running.  I opted for the Norton 60 day trial, mainly to have something between me and those who would screw with the new machine.  What's the best anti-virus, anti-phishing program in your opinion, for general home use?

Norton sucks.  Go with kaspresky.  It's on sale at fry's electronics this weekend for 50 bucks with a 50 dollar mail in rebate, which means it's free.

Right on!  I started using it a little over a year ago and according to my geek consultant it kicks butt over the others; besides if Fry's is basically giving it away, WTF  that's a no brainer, - free is my favorite kind.  Believe me, you will be VERY happy with Kaspersky!   O0

I've had Avast on my pcs for a while now.  Works pretty well and it's free for the regular home edition.

McAfee.

Nothing wrong with Norton, other then it costs around $60 a year.

For free however, Microsoft which is clearly a well funded company with a little background experience in computers now offers an Anti-Virus and security suite of their own. Microsoft Security Essentials. The only requirement is that your version of Windows is not pirated.

I used Norton for years, never had any problems.

I have a friend who works Tech Support and she's been trying to get me to convert to McAfee. (I just learned I get it free from where I work, so I'll be converting to it soon)

A Dell tech working on my PC earlier this week (warrenty work) and he was recommending Microsoft Security Essentials.

I'd buy a Mac if I were you but if you really like your Windows machine I'd use Avast. It's free and better than any paid program I've seen. Good luck!

Go Kaspersky! O0 I switched to Kaspersky last year and it found all sorts of trojans and evil things  :o lurking that Norton overlooked.
