Better shaving cream/gel
« on: May 21, 2010, 06:16:07 PM »
Right now I'm using some generic brand shaving cream with menthol. it seems to work okay but I noticed on the sides I have to go over and over to get the desired smooth results with a fresh mach3 blade. So I'm thinking the problem is lubrication, any recommendations to an affordable higher quality shaving cream?

Alot of people like the Headslick ( I don't ) I use the Bodyshop maca root shave cream and the Manumission shave gel, pacific shave oil works great to.

Search around the forum.

Try a shaving gel as opposed to a shaving cream.  I've always liked the feel of it better.  Try Edge, Aveeno, Mach III, etc.

If I HAVE to use a can, I use Edge what ever the purple can is.  My go to is CO Bigalow that comes in a green metal tube from Bath and Body works and a Badger Brush.  I also have a few shave soaps and other creams.  I also really like Kiss My Face cream but have not found a local source.  Canned cream/gel has propellant in them which aids in drying out your skin.  They also tend to make my skin feel better lubricated.

Do you have a Trader Joe's nearby? My current favorite shaving cream is their own line, honey mango scent. The smell is pretty cloying while shaving, but it doesn't linger. It's $3.50 for a large tube. I have to use a good bit each shave -- this is not one of those tiny little dab products. But like I said, it's my current favorite. The consistency is a bit different from either a foam or gel -- it more along the lines of hair conditioner.

Big fan of anything made by Taylor's of Old Bond Street. It's a traditional shaving cream applied with a brush.

I love the headslick by Headblade.  But I always rinse and take a second pass using Aveeno Positively Smooth shave gel, using my Schick Xtreme 3.  It has a soy based ingredient that does wonders. Plus the price is very reasonable, ususally about $4.99 a can. It's sold in most local stores, but be sure to get the one with the light blue cap. Avoid the Theraputic gel (dark blue cap) as it doesn't do nearly as good a job. Also, the Positively smooth gel guards against nicks and cuts.

I've recently started using Cremo. This stuff is very slippery, and I haven't cut myself yet since I started using it(about two months). It also rinses easily from my triple blades!

I tried the KOS Sensitive gel this morning for the first time. It's pretty good and I love the scent- sort of medicinal and minty...good stuff!

I use cream rinse hair conditioner. It's extremely slick & stays wet much longer than shave creams and gels. It allows me to shave against the grain with no cuts or nicks until my head is completely smooth. I also use it to shave my face. It leaves your face and scalp very soft also. And it's very cheap too. I purchase it at the Dollar Store.
