How to

I never quite managed to get the hang of clipping my own hair with the Wahl clippers, but after shaving for the first time, I'm afraid I might not get the hang of shaving my head either. I managed the top and sides o.k., but the back proved difficult. My wife had to touch up the spots I missed and it created some razor burn and irritation.
Any suggestions for making it more manageable to shave the back of the head?

I'm new to head shaving myself, What i did on the back of my head is run your other hand infront of the razor and feel your way. You can feel the stubble that you missed. as far as the razor burn, Try going With the grain for your first 3-4 shaves to let your scalp get used to the friction. make sure you are using a good shaving cream or oil to cut down on friction and razor burn.
Also try going as slow as possible, try to avoid going over the same place too many times. I'm at a slight advantage because i used to buzz cut my own hair for years, so i got good at Feeling with my head where i have been and where i havent, think of it like mowing the lawn

N_S makes a good suggestion about using your extra hand.
Also.... as you shave your head more and more you'll just simply get better at it. The HeadBlade, though not for everyone, is also a great shaving tool that makes hard to reach areas easier to get to.

Since you already own a HeadBlade I think you should give it a try. There's a learning curve as well, but to me shaving feels much easier with it than with a blade on a stick - especially on the back of my head.

Thanks guys. I'm on vacation this week so I'll have at least 3 chances to shave this week and put some of your suggestions into practice. I'm waiting a couple of days between to help reduce the chance of irritation.

While I really like my headblade, and use it for the majority of my head shaving, I don't think it's the best design for shaving your sides if you go ATG, it's kinda awkward in that regard. I think I prefer a typical razor for that.. jus' sayin.

I've been using HeadBlade with long strokes front to back. I find that I can feel where the blade has been. Move over for the next sweep and continue the process. When I'm done I do back to front to finish. Works for me and does a complete job.
Sides I go front to back rather than top to bottom. Then back to front. Used to comb my hair front to back so I guess it got trained in that direction. Gives me a good close shave.
But it depends on which way the grain goes. Hair that grows top to bottom on the sides would require a top down sweep. It's a whole different hand motion and around the ears is another problem.

The Head Blade made things much easier. As was suggested, it seems easier to feel my way with the Head Blade.
