High triglycerides
« on: April 12, 2010, 06:53:51 PM »
I've struggled with high triglycerides for several years.

My wife and I are nearly vegetarians (except for about 2 days per week).  We never eat anything fried anymore, joined a CSA, eat turnip greens, salads, etc.

My Dr. finally had enough of my lack of progress during the last visit and said, "It's time you get off your ass and do something about this."

I'm sure he forgot that I had double knee surgery last year (arthritis) and that I can't run or walk for fitness anymore. But, he did spur me to action.

I've been paying strict attention to the carbs in what I eat and as a result I've lost 13 lbs this year. Today I discovered that I need to buy a SMALLER belt to hold up my pants (pretty cool).

I've been prescribed 4,000 mg of fish oil daily to help kick start the triglyceride reduction. I had been taking over the counter fish oil for years, but the Dr. says stay away from OTC. It's supposedly got some not so good stuff in it because it's not reallly regulated (yuck).

Anyone else got triglyceride tips?

Isn't red wine supposed to be good for cardiovascular health?

I don't think it is if you have a problem w/ Hi Tri's.  Otherwise, red wine is okay and can be good for you as can dark chocolate, red grapes, etc.

Alcohol is pretty easy.....since I drink about 5 or 6 beers in a year.

I deal with high triglycerides and diabetes.  I have no advice as I was just diagnosed with both last December.  I go back for a blood draw later this month.  I have been losing weight so I am hoping that the levels are going down.  All I have been given for triglycerides has been to take a baby asprin once a day.  Just want you to know that there is another sly guy with your condition!
