With the Vancouver 2010 Olympics coming to a end, I was just wondering if any of you have attended a Olympics or a World's Fair? Also what about World Cup or even some other noteworthy events, athletic or not?
As for myself, I attended the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. I got to see the luge and the 90 meter ski jump. I was also able to attend the 1990 Goodwill Games here in Seattle where I saw volleyball and baseball.
I have also attended TWO World's Fairs. The first one was Expo '74 in Spokane, which had a environmental theme. The second one was Expo '86 in Vancouver which had a transportation and communications theme.
To me the most special events were the Vancouver Expo and the Salt Lake City Olympics. While the other events were fun, the Vancouver Expo was much larger than the Spokane Expo. There was a greater sense of excitement there. I was also a adult during Expo '86. The Salt Lake Olympics were special because I never thought I would ever be able to attend a Olympics.
Anyway, what cool events have you all attended?
Way back when, I went to several days of the Squaw Valley Winter Olymipics, 1960! Then the San Antonio World Fair, and of course the 1984 World Fair in New Orleans--it went bankrupt--very popular w/ the locals but for people from the "real" world, New Orleans in August isn't exactly on the top of anyone's travel "bucket list!" if they have any sense at all.
Lived in Los Angeles for the '84 Summer games. The torch came right through my neighborhood.
The "major" events I've attended include:
1. World Cup in 1994 when it was here in the US.
2. 1997 Ryder Cup in Valderrama, Spain (beautiful country).
3. Game 1 of the 1989 World Series when my Oakland A's swept those pathetic San Francisco Giants!!
Sadly, that earthquake will be remembered more for the Loma Prieta Earthquake than my
OAKLAND A'S SWEEPING THE PATHETIC SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS.
L.A. riots...circa '91 - '92.....could smell the smoke of burning Compton from my porch in North Long Beach. We would never pull closer to 6 or 7 feet behind the car ahead of us at a stop light in case we had to make a mad dash from low-life mauraders.
Does that count as a major event?
Went to the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Close to home, you know.
