Curling?...First of all....
« on: February 27, 2010, 06:18:59 PM »
...I mean no offense to those who are a fan of CURLING or Curling practitioners...

But I've spent the most time watching the Curling this time around with the winter olympics....just out of sheer curiosity of the absurdity of that "sport."

Now I'm don't claim that I could walk out and do it.....but the other winter sports (or any olympic sport for that matter) the skill, speed, strength, endurance and/or danger level is pretty apparent.

but Curling?  :-\

Looks to me like it takes a fair amount of skill, and it doesn't seem any more absurd to me than any other sport -- we're just used to the arbitrary rules of sports we're more familiar with.

I guess the brooming part just cracks me up.  Maybe that's the part that strikes me as, quote/unquote "absurd." If it were just the guy/gal pushing it on out there......

I was thinking the same thing.

Every four years for almost everyone, this sport comes up because of the Olympics, and, for me at least, every four years I'll spend an hour or two watching a sport I've never participated in, don't understand and can't even figure out the skill points.  That being said, the sport requires a lot of investment in facilities, etc.  I'm just amazed that it goes underground again for most of us--until the next Winter Olympics.  The players never fall on their a$$es either, and you think they would--I know I would.

I watched more than usual to...and to see the sweeping actually affect the course of the "whatever it is they slide" was cool as I tried to figure out who had to do what to knock off China.  Then it was subtle to see how they would walk down sweeping and not trip over any of the "whatever it is they slide" that had already been played...

...and then figure skating came on... :*))
