Isn't it cold on your head?
« on: January 05, 2010, 09:28:26 AM »
Hi guys,

got two comments at work today.

1st:
With that haircut you need that cap of yours.

Me:
Yes, I do, and I don't mess up my hair that way.

2nd:
Doesn't it get cold up there with this cold weather? I've heard, that one looses 40% of bodyheat through the head.

Me:
I wear a nicewarm cap. Watch me when I leave. It's not cold, and I would wear that cap anyway.

Gotta love that myth about major amounts of body heat escaping through the head.

As this article http://bit.ly/lfFc (with a great SBG photo, BTW) says: If as much as 45 percent of body heat were lost through your head, going out without a hat would feel like going out without trousers.

I'm kind of tired of people saying, "Don't you get cold without any hair?"  Never felt the "cold" on my smooth scalp until the mid-30's, but that was the same w/ hair & the combover part of my life too.  The benefit is I can pull on a beanie if it's in the 30's, but I couldn't w/ the combover bc it would mess up my carefully sprayed down coverup.  Now, particularly leaving the gym, I can pull on the fleese beanie and make sure I'm warm.  I think I could do without that too, but I have to have a jacket or fleese pullover on my chest or I get cold really fast.
With out a fringe I don't particularly care for baseball caps, all mine have stiching that is really irritating on my scalp and the fringe kept that off my skin.  I even bought an stretch beanie to wear under safety helmets.
Great find, now I can tell the idiots that question me that it is a myth!

Hi,

sorry, english is not my native language.

I guess, I mean a beanie, or knitted hat - I don't mean a baseball cap.

Of course it does get cold. if one does not wear a hat, because without any hair you feel every breeze on your head.
That is one of the nice parts of the bald head in the summer, because you can feel every breeze.

In the wintertime though, if its a icecold breeze, it is not so comfortable and that is why we wear hats.

I don't know about that myth, about loosing so much bodyheat through the head.
It doesn't really matter anyway.
But what is true is, that one is more sensitive to temperaturechance or any breeze on the hairless scalp.
Besides that, in cole weather, the hair on the head does not really help that much either and one should wear a hat anyway.
And the big plus on having a shaved head is, that you don't need to worry about your hair getting out of place. :-D

I get that alot too. Going outside in the crisp cool air after shaving is awesome. Same with snowflakes on a bald head.

Hi Mike,

brrrrrrrrrrr ... to cold for me - always wear my hat.

But I might give it a try with the snowflakes - sounds interesting.
And it might snow in a few days. :-)

If it's below about 45 F I'm bundled up.  Growing up in southern climates I don't like dealing with the extreme cold.  If it's below freezing I'm decked out in a parka, scarf and beanie.  I might try to get a little sun on it to get some vitamin D but usually it's stayin on until I get inside.

Yeah, sometimer, catch the snowflakes! We're only having so little opportunities for that in the flat part of Germany, so don't miss it.

When it's cold outside I love to cool down the head when I walk home after work by not wearing the knitted cap until I can't stand it any longer.  :)

I'm dumb.  I smoke.  I am trying to quit.  But, even if I had hair..., going outside for a break would still be cold.  And, I like to get OUT of the building for a little bit of ME time.  But, it seems like every other day, someone sees me coming back inside and ask me where my hat is or aren't you cold with that haircut.  It happened to me today as a matter of fact.

I laughed and said, it's just gets numb...is that bad?

Honestly though, I don't really mind the cold on the noggin.  I had buzzed hair for years and that really didn't keep me warm either.  I just don't like when it rains.  Then I have to have a hat.  I love hats though!  But, that is more for fashion statement kind of thing for when I go out on the town or whatever.  And since I have been sly, I find myself not wearing hats at all really.   And, I was always taught to take my hat off indoors (my only exception is when I go to a pub/bar.

When I wear a hat to work, I take it off as soon as I come inside, then I am holding my hat waiting for the elevator, and the long walk to my desk.

A side note:  It's always women that asks about my head being cold.   I think it might be a way for them to start a conversation.  I swear since I went sly I get more looks from the ladies.  Hehe.

Probably four or five years ago I stumbled upon a snug fitting "running" cap from Lululemon, I think it was about $18.  It has probably been my most used piece of headware ever, aside from the really cold winter days here in Canada, and the in the summer, this thing goes with me always, just warm enough but it still breathes very well.

What I think is the greatest feeling in the cold wintertime is getting into our hot tub when it is snowing and below 20 degrees. The water is 100 degrees and the cold air and the snow coming down on top of my bald head is awesome!  O0

What's not awesome are the $150 electric bills in the winter. That was our first winter with the hot tub four years ago. We have always drained and shut it down in the winters since. My wife really misses it as the winter is the best time to use it.
