More about my job.........
« on: December 27, 2009, 04:29:49 PM »
So the wife and I talked about my lack of Christmas Spirit this year and it all came down to one thing..... my job. I am the ONLY person in my facility that does exactly what I do..... and I love it that way. My customer base has expanded greatly through out the various areas of our facility in the last year.... which again is great for me because I am always busy with little if any down time.
This often means tight schedules and stacks of work. I take great pride in my work, get top notch reviews, and I'm sought out because of my skills.
But my management is composed mostly of people with very poor people skills and an inability to reward or commend those that complete the work...... and I believe that is the root of my lack of Christmas Spirit this year.

I'm just tired of not being rewarded and commended when I know for a fact that our management gets their's.... all on the backs of guys like me. Yes I know that's basically how it works but this Man is fed up with it. I actually interviewed with another group at our facility two years ago and they courted me hard.... but because of some misplaced sense of loyalty I passed on the offer and stayed put.
Recently I have again been asked to come work for the folks i interviewed with two years ago....... and a couple of weeks ago I was asked if I would be interested in coming to work for a third group.

I made the comment to my wife yesterday that "If I'm still working for this same group of people at this time next year I'd be very surprised".

Change is in the air for me in 2010........... Hopefully this time I'll have the nuts to snatch the opportunity when it presentts itself.

Mike,

Sounds like loyalty is only a one-way thing in your current situation.  I lost all patience for the corporate world after 13 years and went into business, which was almost 15 years ago.  It was due to BS like what you've described.

During my 13 years working for large corporations I always did my best to be a top producer and honest employee, but I did look out for myself at the same time.  I tended to move around a lot.  As better opportunities presented themselves, I took advantage of them.   I eventually found a job I loved, all around, and stayed there 6 years which was a long time for me.  But, even that grew old and all of the red tape and BS was my incentive to quit and start my business.

No regrets for any of it.  Seize the opportunities Mike, if they are a good fit for what you're looking for.

Andrew

Be very careful Mike... I was making $30.00 per hour and very secure but I was very unhappy with the work conditions so I decided to leave that job for another.  Things didn't work out and the next thing I knew I couldn't find a job anywhere.  I've been unemployed for a year and I'd give anything to be back in the job I left.  Now may not be the time.  :-\  Just sayin'.

I wouldn't be leaving my job but tranferring to another area within the Facility.......... but your warning will be heeded.

Mike, I feel your pain.  I tend to be extremely loyal to the point of tunnel vision.

However, after 19 years in healthcare in large and small facilities, the only loyalty your employer has is to itself.  Make no mistake.  If the choice is the be made between you and them, it WILL be you everytime regardless of your reviews or anything else.

I don't think I'm telling you anything you don't already know.  That's one reason I left radiology management when I was put into that position with a very hard working employee.  It tore my heart out to let her go.  I decided right then that I didn't have the stomach for management.

Change is not a bad thing.  Good luck!

Either that, or get them to hire me as your boss!

Being unhappy at work sucks.  The only other considerations that you might consider are, 1) any agreement you may have signed w/ the current group that would preclude working for the other group for a period of time; and 2) is there a reasonable expectation for advancement in your field so that in the worst case you come away a more valuable commodity in the job market.  If the answer to 1 is no, and 2 is yes, pack up your box and get out of Dodge.

For myself Mike, I took early retirement because of upper management.  Or should I say lack of management.  I worked for 22 yrs. in the same office.  I was always there, sick, floods, etc. no matter what.  Took pride in my work and was well respected by the customer base.  If a higher position became available, they would call me in for an interview.  Guess what, the position went to a friend or relative of the big boss.  My last year there, I went to three interviews and finally told them that i wasn't interested.  I was informed that if I persisted my chances of advancement were nil.  Big mouth me, " you mean all the boss's friends and family have died?".  Tendered my resignation the next week.  So yes Mike, I know where your coming from.  Good luck, hope you get what you want!
