Anyone have a good....
« on: December 25, 2009, 09:30:18 AM »
...feel for the layout of Manhattan (New York City)?

I'm looking for what part of town would be especially cool for Christmas time (shopping, window displays, etc.).

What immediately comes to mind is Rockefeller center with the ice-skating and what not.

Next Christmas I'll be able to fulfill a long-time dream of spending Christmas in Manhattan, but I don't know a THING about New York City.

oh.....MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!

That's great news, and if you can't have fun in the Big Apple you can't have fun any place--it's really a great town, sights, food, and the great spirit of the people.  It's a fantastic place to visit--save a lot of money, it's kind of pricey, but well worth it.

I agree with Tom.  Lots to do in Times Square (midtown).  Brings lots of $$$ ...

Yep, Midtown.  Times Square and 5th avenue for shopping..  Also Rockefeller Center for some ice skating.  Hit the Bull and Bear at the Waldorf for some good steak and drinks.  Head up to the Plaza hotel for some brunch and then a stroll through Central Park.

There are loads of travel books on NYC.  You might want to buy one to make a rough schedule of what you want to have as anchors for your trip.  The Statue of Liberty is the ultimate tourist thing, but then again who doesn't get a chill when they approach that Lady.  Ground Zero is still an awesome place.  The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Midtown, has several weeks of exhibits, but plan an hour or two for any particular favorite artists or artistic genres.  Fifth Avenue, and the street food vendors--a good buy and it can be great food.

I'm going to go with everyone else, midtown is a great place to start but do some research, the city has so much to do, and yess its pricey.

Yes, midtown is probably the best place to start for things to do. If you want to take in a show, check out the "2-for-1" booth right in the middle of the street.

Now if you want pizza (you KNOW you do) you MUST go to John's Pizza on Bleeker Street down in the Village. It's between 6th & 7th st.

Right next door is some of the BEST Gelato you will ever wrap your lips around!

Hey Rob, I think Midtown would be great for a holiday visit. Rockefeller center is a must for viewing the great "Tree", don't forget to take pics, and then skating and hot chocolate if you like.
Plenty of shopping in Times Square now, Macy's on 34th St. for great window displays, and window shopping on Fifth Avenue as well.

Check out the neighborhoods and culture of SoHo, Tribeca, Little Italy and Chinatown. Many small shops and boutiques for shopping, and great restaurants in each section.

It can get pricey, but if you plan well ahead, and it sounds like you are, you should be prepared.
There's so much to see and do, so definitely have your main points of interest nailed down. You can get Uptown/Downtown fairly easily by subway or taxi.

I will add more info as I think of it.
