Bald 101- How does it work ?
« on: December 21, 2009, 12:31:24 PM »
I know it seems like a silly question, but what do you do after shaving?

Both times I did it, I only shaved with a BIC razor and did not put some cream or something after.

So how should I start? I bought the Headblade to shave and I have a couple of questions:

#1) Should I put some cream after I shaved?
#2) Should I shave everyday ?
#3) When I shaved both times with a bic razor, my head was "sticky" in a way and it was not comfortable to put a hat or something.

Thanks!

First, Welcome to the site.
There are lots of assets here, the routines thread will really amaze you at the number of ways guys pursue the goal of a really smooth dome.
But my answer to your questions:
#1) Should I put some cream after I shaved?
Definately, if only one I would recommend Nivea Extreme--it goes a long way, feels great and has a lite agreeable smell.

#2) Should I shave everyday ?
This depends, how fast your remaining hair grows and what your tolerance for stubble, aka velco.  I have a relatively rapid growth and I can't stand stubble so I shave daily, generally after the gym.  One thing to note, it helps to get a long lasting smooth dome if you can wait for an hour or so, like going to the gym, before shaving.  Some guys only shave every other day bc that suits them.  Remember, it's your dome, it's supposed to be comfortable.  Do what you feel best doing.
#3) When I shaved both times with a bic razor, my head was "sticky" in a way and it was not comfortable to put a hat or something.
I wouldn't use any disposable blades on my scalp or face.  My choice is the new M5 by Personna.  Others love the Headblade, or the Mach III, or Fusion--I used that until I ran into M5.  Also, a good shave creme is essential, I love my Headslick, but I've also used Baldguys Gel.  I always use an "undercoat" of Shave Secret, too.  If your scalp is oily or sticky, wipe it off with a Baldguys Headwipe, or in a pinch a wet paper towel in the bathroom where you work.

Welcome again, enjoy the freedom.  All of us are here to answer your questions.

That "stickiness' was probably stubble. First shave with the grain and then against the grain for the smoothest possible shave.

As for after the shave.... some guys use lotions, balms, etc. and some do not.

For the after shave I have a concoction that I make myself. It is a bottle of Witch Hazel with some aloe vera gel mixed in. Nothing complex, I just shake it. All I look for is a little thickening of the consistency of the WH. It starts off like water but it doesn't take a whole lot of aloe to thicken it just a bit. After this I add Tea Tree Oil, the real stuff not the fragrance. I add this a few drops at a time until when I take the cap off I can smell the TTO. Shake this before each use.
The WH is kind of a skin tingler for me, it kinda wakes up my scalp plus it tends to reduce the sting caused by any minor razor nicks. The aloe is just a good all round skin saver although a few guys here in the forum have reported various levels of skin irritation from using aloe. The Tea Tree Oil is a natural antiseptic.

I go along with the other guys who have weighed in here about razor quality. The Head Blade is what, I think, most of the guys in the forum use. Statistically it's maybe between that and M5/Fusion users. Stick with quality. Tossables might appear cheaper but they will cost you in other ways. Plus, as often as you will replace them they won't save much over time. To complicate matters further Head Blade makes both a double and a triple cart. I favor the HB triples but when I run out I use Sensor Excel doubles. Both of these work well for me. To get a bit more life out of them I rinse them really well after a scrape and then spray rubbing alcohol on them to control bacteria.

As far as shaving every day.....speaking for myself I shave every other day and only vary this if I am doing something special. Some guys in the forum are dailies some are not. Go by what feels right for you, time will tell.

Welcome, You have come to the right place. I agree with saintc on the Nivea Extreme. It really sooths the scalp after the first few shaves. I use the headblade everyday and love it but I know some of the other guys prefer more traditional style razors. Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.
