Thoughts after first shave
« on: November 19, 2009, 05:29:55 AM »
My first shave with a blade is now done. Wow. A couple of thoughts. I was surprised at experiencing numbness in the back of my head. I wondered what was it but now I read from your posts it's just normal. Another thing that I didn't expect was that it is so difficult to get the dome smooth! I was armed with Sensor Excel twinblade and Headslick. I avoided using pressure and the razor just glided. But the shadow was so visible! Even after multiple rounds. Must have spend over half hour shaving my head smooth...

Congrats!

Very good looking smooth dome O0.

The numbness is a thing of the first days - keep it in mind.

If going first with the grain, then against the grain you'll get very fast a smooth dome. Experience is very imprortant.

In a couple of days your skin will have a little tan (now in fall?) and the shadow will not be as visible as now.

Enjoy your new sly life.

Best wishes

J

Congratulations!  O0
With time comes practice, so the process will get faster.
And the shadow ... it is surprising because of all the images of completely clean bald men we see in ads or movies I guess.
Give yourself some time to get used to it.

Get a headblade. I think that's where the HB is at it's best. It's extremely easy to get a close shave back there.

Im with Schro on this.  You need to get the HB.  Practice makes perfect, your shaves will go faster with time.

Wow I wish I could experience that first time Numbness.  Almost makes you want to grow your hair back to see you if you can experience it again..

Great job, Iconic, and ditto about the HeadBlade -- probably wouldn't shave my head without it... just too darn quick and easy when you get the hang of it.
How is that Hopey / Changey thing working for you?

Ok, thanks guys. I think the result was not bad, no nicks, no irritation and so on. I guess practice will improve my shaving a lot and yes, I'm gonna try HB.

Another HeadBlade endorser here. I started off with the Classic, then went to the Sport (little wheels), then I got a Ghost which is a see-through Classic. My preference is back to the Classic design, no wheels. I think I get a closer and safer shave without the Matchbox effect.

You, my friend, have a spectacular avatar. Did a pro do that pic? THAT should be in a bald ad!

With all due respects to my brothers who shave w/ the HB, I would just like to add that if you have the Fusion or even the M5 available to you, that would be another great tool to maintain that great dome--really a great picture.
Enjoy the sly experience, however you get there.

Yup... HeadBlade and against the grain.  It'll go faster with a little practice!  O:O

UPDATE: This really is experimenting to find the right tools. Didn't buy HB yet, but I'm up to it soon. This time I experimented with a traditional DE. For some strange reason the result was much smoother than with Sensor!!! Can't really believe it. That same DE that I can't use for my face works wonder for my dome. To be honest I have to add that  I finished with Sensor, because shaving on the back of my head was a bit complicated otherwise.

Thanks again for response. And that euphoric state captured in my avatar, that picture was a result of playing with the camera of my laptop on a boring day, quite pleased with it myself.

It's true Iconic, we don't really need all those "extra" blades, one will do just fine as proved by generations of men before us. They had no problem getting a good, smooth shave.

Just did my first shave after being buzzed with guardless Wahl clippers by the barber. So maybe two or three days' growth with some experimental shaving using my trusty Norelco.

Today I used a Fusion and Headslick. I did not use a second mirror. First Headslick is a wonderful icy shave cream. It does garner raves as a face shave cream at wet shaver websites. It lathered well and chilled my scalp for the entire shave.

Second, the mild Fusion blades. I thought I would be super careful and shave only with the grain. Well, I couldn't feel any results or see any stubble on the razor.   So I went against the grain, too. Yay! a very good nick-free shave. I did not go for perfect, preferring a good shave to BBS shave with nicks.  And voila, the sink was full of stubble. I'm not as follicularly challenged as I think I am.

I think a lot of the credit goes to the Fusion cartridge. Even though despised by wet shavers, it produces a close, nick-free shave.  I may try an M3 next as those cartridges must be cheaper.

I can't imagine that the Headblade would yield any better results, but it may be faster.
