Losing my Hair, in car sales don't know what to do.
« on: November 11, 2009, 12:33:50 PM »
Hello,

This is my first post, I have been losing my hair for awhile now. I still have hair up there but it is getting thin. I like having hair and going bald makes me sad. However after reading a bunch of your posts it sounds like it wont be to bad.

I am sooo nervous about shaving my head as I am in a sales/customer service industry. I fear my fellow co-workers will look at me different, my boss may not approve of it, worst of all my older customers will not accept the look.

I am 24, the youngest guy at the dealership. The other 3 sales guys are all in their late 50's and early 60's "they all have hair". I really don't think I will fit in anymore. Since realizing that I will have to shave my head soon as I will not sport the "bald on top hair on the sides" look. I am now looking to get into more of a trade than being in sales. I feel I would fit in better there. Plus I am beginning to hate sales and my customers.

Thanks for listening guys,

Andy

Andy:
Many times the initial post says something that the writer may not have thought about when he started writing.  IMO, you have outlined the issue well and you have to resolve your issues on your job commitment.  Good news, car sales don't look like a strong growth field right now but the experience probably sharpened your bargaining and pricing skills--and that talent will serve you well in whatever field you find that holds your interest and where you have a much more positive social attitude.  Solve that and you'll have no trouble grabbing a razor at some point and going sly, or even buzzing to see if that works too.  But resolve your issues w/ your work and people first.  The rest is only hair.

Welcome to the forum, Andy. Go sly. You're going to surprise yourself. When you shave your head, you'll most likely get a genuine boost to your self-confidence. It's such a strong, affirmative statement. You may find that your whole outlook on what you are doing, career-wise, will change just as dramatically as your appearance. Nothing sells like self-confidence. People are just naturally drawn to self-confident guys. You might even start enjoying yourself at work. Go for it!

Based on the title of your thread, I have diagnosed the cause of your hair loss and have the perfect solution....get out of car sales!!  :*))
(sorry, that's just how I read your title).

In all seriousness, as the guys before me have said, you'll likely get a boost of confidence by going sly. If nothing else, you'll not be consumed with how people are looking at your MPB. Remember, give it 30 days.

Good luck.

Andy, shave that head down and get out there and sell some cars , man!

Look around, smooth and slick heads are everywhere these days, it's a major feeling of confidence, especially when you're losing it to mpb.

Give it a go, and let us know how you feel.    O0

Thanks guys for being so positive about the whole thing.

I think I am going to talk to my boss about it soon and just take the plunge, I am actively looking at getting out anyway. So if it doesn't fly no harm done.

I shaved my head pretty short once when I was in Thailand and the girls that have seen the picture said I looked good. I still had hair though I think it was a number 1 or 2...

I am kind of thin though, I think Sly suits someone with weight and muscle. Right now I am 5"10 160... I am really going to have to work on that lol.

My head is going to be so pale compared to my face lol...

Thanks again everyone,

Andy

Andy:

Change of jobs and hair transformation could be emotionally chaotic during same period.  Go for a tight buzz cut during Thanksgiving Holiday and then total head shave during Christmas.  When you shave your head for the Holidays, just tell everyone you wanted your head to resemble a shiny Christmas tree ornament and leave it at that !  Good luck on new job endevours !  Post pictures and welcome to this site !

Hey man,

It's always good to hit the gym, but I wouldn't worry about being too thin.  I'm 5-10 and around 150, and the bald head looks fine on me.  Give yourself a little while to adjust to the guy in the mirror, and you're gonna love it.

As for work, I wouldn't worry too much.  I was in a pretty senior management position at a Fortune 100 company the first time I shaved my head, and after the first couple of days everybody got over it.  I think that balding guys get a free pass on shaving, even in the most conservative companies.

And try Juergens Natural Glow for the white scalp - stuff works incredibly well for me, and I'm the palest guy I know.

Welcome to SBG!

I'm in sales and have no issues selling anything and I'm a bald advocate.

Do NOT ask your boss for permission as he has no right to have that authority.  Do it, feel confident, and make more sales.  Your boss only wants you to make sales.

People are not limited by the circumstance that they are born in. They are limited by the size of their dreams. Show them that their dreams can have no limits and in turn their accomplishments can be limitless.

First, let me repeat what Tyler said "dont ask your boss!" it isnt up to him/her to decide how you style your hair. Recently when I went car shopping I got a few guys that had MPB and you could tell they were self concious about it and they werent able to sell as well. Then I went to a carlot that had 4 guys, 2 with hair, one with MPB, and one bald. The two with hair seemed too cocky, the guy with MPB seemed like he wanted to crawl under a rock, and the bald guy had just enough self confidence but not too much. Also the clean shaved guy looked more professional to me, the slackers with shaggy hair looked like they'd rather be watching tv and the guy with MPB seemed shy and twitchy but the bald guy loved his job and helping customers.
If anything your boss will like it, clean shaved is more clean and tidy looking, no hair to be messed up.

Andy,

I'm in the car business also. I write service for an Acura dealer. When I went SLY almost 4 years ago I thought the same thing. I wasn't losing my hair, but it was not a big deal to anyone except me. I worried most about what the owner would say.

No biggie!!! I even clients asking me about the razor I use and how I get the nice sheen, all that jazz.

Trust me, you'll be glad you did it
