Shaving frequency question
« on: October 23, 2009, 05:37:58 PM »
So I find that if I shave on every other day that I stay smoother longer.  Say I shave Monday, Wednesday and Friday night; I have stubble Tuesday and Thursday night and Tuesday and Thursday morning i am still smooth enough to have issues with hats slipping off.  When I shave every morning I am finding that at 5 o'clock the stubble as bad as it normally is on Tuesday and Thursday nights.  It seems if I try and shave everyday I cant get it as close?  Has anyone experienced this?

Also has anyone noticed that some blades work better if you have a couple days growth versus just stubble and some work better if it is just stubble rather than a couple days growth?

I use the HeadBlade with the Sensor Excel (double blade), HeadRub, HeadWash, HeadSlick, witch hazel and HeadLube.  I use to use ClearHead but heard about  witch hazel on the broads and like it better.

I know what you mean.  Getting an extra days growth seems to really allow for a closer and longer lasting shave.  Think there is more hair to grab or something.

I figured out a long time ago that if I have some growth I get a better shave.  I shave twice a week, Saturday and Wednesday

Yes, you'll get a better shave with some growth, but I can't stand to have a full day's growth, so I shave daily.

I agree.  I seem to get a better shave if I have more than 24 hours worth of growth.  But I can't stand the stubble!  Everyday shaver here.

Same here.  I'm to the point where I don't feel like I can go out in public if my head isn't freshly shaved.  Not that anyone else notices, but I feel a lot more presentable when my head is slick.  I just don't feel like myself when there's any stubble at all up there.

Daily, except on Sunday once in a while, it just makes me feel cleaner and more presentable--it's also sort of what "wakes" me up and prepares me for the day mentally.

So is the only difference the amount of growth or has anyone noticed that one razor is better than another for growth vs stubble?

I think some razors need a little extra "length" to really grab hold, particularly single or double blades.  I used Fusion from the start, and now have migrated to M5, but with the multiple blades, each blade cutting and pulling the hair out slightly, let's me get a really smooth result with everyday use.  And as others have noted, the time in the morning smoothing out the dome almost has a spiritual awakening feeling.  Damn it feels good after a cold water rinse or an ice cube to dry off a perfectly smooth head, it's really something only Sly guys understand.

I'm an every other day shaver, my hair just doesn't grow enough in 24 hours to really make it worth it.  I might skip a day here and there, usually because I have an early game start and I'm just too tired, and I usually try and sync up my shaving pattern to coincide with times when I know I'll be out and about.
