I often try to set aside at least 24 hours a week where I don't use anything with a microchip or that has any electrons flowing through it. No telephone, no cell phone, no computer, no television, no lighting fixtures, no microwave, no car. Just me, the dog, the porch and a good book and maybe time spent with friends and neighbors. Even my watch is analog and self winding, but I leave it on the nightstand. I try to throw out the concept of time and technology and stop being rushed to move from one thing to the next.It is harder to do than you think. You open that refrigerator and a light comes on. It takes focus for the entire avoidance of electricity. But if you succeed, you feel oddly rewarded. It gives me the break I need to be able to go back to the office on Monday and spend 60+ hours dealing with computer networks and user issues.
Let's not forget www.woot.com and woot-offs! Those are really addicting. I have filled my basement with wine from their deals.
