It's just trial and error.  I use a Fusion and Headslick.

I use Mach III (turbo or regular...whichever blades I can get my hands on) and Head Lube.  I did find no matter what I was using the shave cream/gel would dry out quickly at the sink but I don't have an issue with it when shaving in the shower.  I typically shave with two passes...shave once against the grain, rinse, reapply Head Lube and then shave a 2nd time against the grain then do a cold rinse and voila!
