Sly in July - been a bit of a rough road.......
« on: August 13, 2009, 01:54:45 PM »
Hi gang - you've got a new member!  I shaved my head on July 1st after the birth of my 1st son.  I always said I'd shave my noggin at age 40, but figured, why not do it now at 35?  Plus, I figured I'd rather do it now and not have 5 years of pics and video of my son and "daddy with hair" followed by "daddy without hair".  I thought that would be pretty weird.  Well, it made sense at the time.......

My first month was BRUTAL.  I got a horrible case of scalp fungus from my barber's clippers (he shaved me down on 7/1).  Anyone who has ever gone through it, it's not fun.  It did a number on the confidence level too!  After prescription meds and topical creams, it has cleared and gone away, so it's in the past.  Onto my sly life!

I have two quick questions:

1.  For the past 2 weeks I've been using the Mach 3 Turbo (CVS didn't have any Mach 3's in stock).  Is there any real difference between the two?  Are Mach 3 blades compatible with the Mach 3 Turbo razor?

2.  I picked up the Bald Guys Shaving Gel the other day and had minimal success.  I found that I had the reapply about 4 times because it kept drying in the areas I hadn't gotten to yet.  As a newbie, it takes me about 20 minutes to shave.  I shave at the sink after a hot shower.  Am I doing something wrong, or do others have the same problem with the Bald Guys Gel?  Should I be using a foam shaving creme instead?

Thanks so much guys.  Great website!!

The "turbo" isn't really any different, I think there is just a thicker aloe strip.  As far as shaving techniques go, there are TONS of threads about different methods and products on the forum.  As with anything you will get much more efficient and effective with time and experience.
I've never used "bald guyz" but if it's drying out maybe try rubbing a wetted hand on an area before shaving it?

Welcome, good decision O0--and another reason Sly is better--your new  "barber" is less likely to have crud on his tools.

Re: shaving "gel"--a lot of us have found a shaving brush--about $7 and Headslick work great-I add a little baby oil to the mix and the result is wonderful.  A lot of guys are Headbladers, others MachIII , and others Fusion--you will work through and find what works best for you.

Take your time, your technique will improve--and again welcome.

I like the Bald Guys gel and have the same problem with gels.  Instead of reapplying, I just rub a wet hand across it and it brings it right back to nice and slick.

Welcome to the Forum Gman!

Antimidas is correct.... if you're gel dries out, just hit it with a little water. A brush is a must for me.

I haven't used Bald Guys Gel but have had the same thing happen with other brands of gels.   I've become a firm believer in the combo of Shave Secret Oil followed by HeadSlick Shave Cream.

The texture of my hair must make it easier to shave (I have fine hair) - even when I first started shaving, it never took more than 10 minutes to shave my entire noggin totally smooth.

I guess the tradeoff is that it grows really fast and I have the sandpaper feel in 3 hours.   :-[

Welcome aboard Gman.   HeadSlick is the only thing I use.  Tried many others but like you find out that I don't get the staying power for the entire shave.  Any other questions. please ask away.  You'll find plenty of help the folks on here.

Gman,

Definately give Headslick a try.  When used with a shave brush you'll get GREAT results.  I'm not a shower shaver myself, but a lot of guys on this forum are, and swear by that method.  I'd imagine the steam from the shower would probably help keep the gel more moisturized than standing by the sink.  Welcome to this forum and the sly life!  Don't hesitate to ask questions.

It seems that different people have different results with different products because of skin and hair type.  But you might try just shaving in the shower.  HeadSlick has been mentioned.  That is the type I usually use.  But if you can't find HeadSlick, then try Kiss My Face.  I have found that to be a suitable substitute.  Kiss My Face can be found at Whole Foods Markets and some Kroger affiliates.

i hate the sandpaper feeling...and it hits me after 5-6 hours too.... but those 5 hours of total smoothness are worth it  8)

@topic: im a headslick guy myself..works really good with a brush and u just need a little bit for the whole head, let it sit in for 20-30 seconds and then ur good to go - the gilette shaving gel was okay too, but thats about it..other gel or foam never did it for me :)

Welcome!  I'm a sink shaver too (most of the time), but I use Edge gel.

Another hardy Welcome Gman.  Glad you could join in.  I too am a sink man who uses Edge sensitive skin gel along with Headslick. I find the same as several others, a dabble of water will revive the gel.

Welcome G-Man...the only thing I can add to the advice is that when I go back & forth between Norerlco electric shaver and my Mach 3 & Edge, I tend to rash bumps so I try to stay away from the electric.
