I am listing this under hobbies, because I figured there may be a few of you in here who own gun safes, or just larger safes in general.
Yesterday in our town we had an incident with two small kids ages 3 and 5 who were locked in a gun safe. The family had the safe to store photo's and other documents. While the mother was upstairs cleaning house, the two small kids were down stairs in the entertainment room playing and watching tv. The mother knew that the safe had been locked the day before because she had checked it before a birthday party the day prior.
There was another child down there with them as well, and the mother heard one of the kids holler go get mommy. She ran down there thinking they were still playing and discovered they were in the safe...locked in. She tried the combo on the key pad but it failed. She tried 4 times and then the battery went dead. After numerous attempts, even after finding a new battery, the safe wouldnt unlock.
The kids were finally rescued by the Jaws of Life. They had to pry the front of the door off because even a locksmith tried for 30 minutes to unsuccessfully get it open. The kids were unharmed and are OK, but only scared because of the loud noise of the jaws of Life.
I just wanted to remind anyone who has a safe..big or small, and has little children, Please Please make sure they are locked at all times. This could have been a tragic accident and gratefully it was not. Kids are born to discover, so never say your child wouldnt do anything like that...because they will.
