Wassup?
« on: July 03, 2009, 02:54:44 PM »
First time caller, long time listener here!

I recently realized that in just a few weeks I will have been shaving my head for 10 years.  10 years!  I was an adult when I first tried it in '98 so I've been experimenting with it for at least 11.  Geeze that really makes me feel old!

There've been a few times in this past decade where I had to stop shaving for about a week, and a few months ago I had to quit for 10 days but I only did so because I had some sort of injury that prevent proper maintenance like a head wound or a severe sunburn.

Geeze, 10 years... Anyway, every time I had to let it grow I really realize that this haircut is more than just a haircut it's almost as if it's a defining aspect of who I am like having arms or legs.  I really feel uncomfortable with fuzz on my head anymore, it's like I'm being forced to wear a costume.  My hair was probably 1/10" long and it literally felt as long as my hair felt when I kept it at a modest 2"-3" in length.  Isn't that amazing?  I'm not joking with that, I think once the hairs got long enough that they could touch each other or be affected by wind those long asleep nerves in my hair follicles fired off OMG! messages to my brain like crazy.

Reshaving after a brief delay always made me feel like I was returning to normal.

Well, here's hoping for another decade!

You don't know me, but I know you.

Welcome Rusty

Respect, I think they should automatically upgrade your status to "Sly". I haven't yet met the arch nemesis of Sly, but then I have been doing this for one week, alas I imagine she is a cruel and brutal mistress.

That she is.  That she is.

The sensation of shaving a head with sunburn is a sensation you'll never forget.  I tried fighting through the pain on my first few sunburns, but now?  I'd gladly give it 4 or 5 days.  Then the next part of the experience is the flaking skin after a burn.  This will even happen from even mild overexposure to the sun.  Shaving your head at this point or a few days after a real burn doesn't hurt but you scrape up lots of dead skin.  Fun stuff.

Sunscreen or a hat is a definite must-have for a bald guy because the scalp is always extra vulnerable to the sun.  First off, the head's round and will always have a point that's directly in line with the sun's rays.  It's kinda like the shoulders in that regard, but unlike the shoulders and everywhere else on the body, your head is never shaded by the body.  If you're in the sun, your head's getting hit.

I once saw a guy with a shaved head that was clearly wearing a baseball hat backwards when he was outside.  His face and neck were all red while his scalp was white except for a red half circle on the front of his head.

But Rusty Shackleford is such an awesome moniker and avatar!  I only wish I could find an image with Dale in disguise like as the deaf electrician or something, but this avatar works great in the way it blends to white.

As for the BOB, that's hysterical, is that really what it's referred to in the military?  What do military guys and their short hair do when training?  Do they put on sunscreen or are they forced to endure the sunlight to "toughen up" their skin?

Thanks for the intro everyone!  But just a warning, when I join a forum I'm often as everywhere as that damn BOB but then fade out to my next internet toy :)
