Don't ever do that again
« on: June 27, 2009, 01:46:38 PM »
Alright I'm 21 and my hair has thinned out so much that I've taken to shaving it down to the skin every 2 weeks, I really can not grow it out anymore.  I actually like the look but people's reactions have been like stomach punches to my confidence.

On two separate occassions I've ran into people who've been like "Whoa what happened to your hair? Don't ever do that again!"  This is coming from people who are used to seeing me with hair or a hat.  I can't tell if they really hate the look or if they're just surprised.  Did you guys get reactions like that when you first shaved it?

You, no doubt, get consulted on their hair choices?

Thought not.

Seriously, some people just are taken aback by the surprise and say stupid things. Other people just say stupid things.

That kind of angry response only came from family, even close friends who asked why never got in my face that way.  Most of the people where I worked either really liked it, the vast majority, or said nothing.

I've got to say, I probably would really sound off at anyone that acted that way to me, but that's just me.  In fact, I might be tempted to punch them--but wouldn't in all probablity.

My advice, blow it off, it's your head, it's your life, let them get on the train or get out of the way.   :x! :x! :x!

First, post a picture of yourself. Second...its your head...your choice...your life.
If you like it...leave it that way.  Some people are just not a fan of bald...and they never will be no matter how good you look.
To them...bald is just "weird" and their reaction shouts that...its like dying your hair shocking blonde, getting a mohawk or any other thing thats
just not the norm.  Roll with it man...eventually it will become "you" and they will accept it because they accept you.
And if they dont get some new friends.

Shave your head.....free your mind.

Thanks for the responses, I've decided I'll stick with it.  My family actually never made any negative comments about it, just people who run into me every now and then, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they were just shocked by the difference.

I'd shave it more often than every two weeks if I were you.  Presenting a consistent appearance tends to shut the naysayers up more than if you keep letting it grow in and then shave it again.

There will always be people like that but trust us....we all took a couple of hits in the beginning
but then you end up with so much confidence. Just keep it shaved for 30 days, every day and see what happens.
It's all about attitude!

I guess the reaction of other people is kind of normal. When I started shaving a lot of people were surprised and asked my why I did that and that I should let it grow back. But I decided to stay bald by choice. Now people can't even imagine me with hair and they are surprised when they see a photo of me with hair. Seems like evreybody got used to it and most peple now say that the bald look is better than b4. I like that!

A coworker said to me yesterday (Ive only been sly since the weekend) rudely that I had attacked my hair again. I just said I preferred this than to walk around with a Monkey's a$$$ on the top of my head and left it at that. I just think its ignorance from people who have never had to walk around in their 20's with thinning/receding hair making them look 20 years older, much better to just shave it off and look younger.

Bentham, the guys are right.  I too went through the rude remarks.  In time, they see the error of their ways and the smart-a$$ remarks stop.  And yes, you really do need to shave daily.  This will also show them that you are serious about the shaving.  Hang in there, it will get better in time.

Shave everyday and these comments will stop.  One possible problem is that your appearance is changing every two weeks.  It throws people off.  If you shave it everyday, people will get used to it....and maybe you will too!

Hey Bentham!  Gotta agree that you need to daily shave or every other day.  I imagine (since no pic is posted) that you have dark brown  to  black hair and having hair to no hair becomes a baldspastic issue to those who DO NOT understand male pattern balding at age 21.  Have you considered tight buzzes and then get into the daily shave routine?  Hey dude, we are all proud here and want you to know that only ignorant idiots punch your confidence down, not your Bald Bros here !  Good Luck !  Post pics and keep us updated !
