Ward's Reviews - Van Der Hagen Deluxe Shave Soap
« on: May 22, 2009, 12:38:38 PM »
The one and only shave soap sold at Walmart, from what I've seen. The Van Der Hagen company line sells a Glycerine, Select and Deluxe shave soaps. This is also the same company that sells the infamous Wally World boar shave brush.

Ease of lathering: Simple. This soaps lathers easily on your head. I couldn't really get a extremely thick lather going though.

Life span of lather: Very good. You won't need to keep 're-energizing' this soap with water.

Moisturizing: This soap is made specially for people with dry skin. Included are shea butter and aloe vera. I've found moisturizing soaps like this to be a 'different beast' than other soaps such as Williams. The whole lathering process just seems different.

Lubrication: Average. Not as good as a glycerin soap though.

How protective?: Above average for a shave soap. I would never 'fly solo' with a shave soap like Williams, as it doesn't do anything to protect your skin from nicks. I'd certainly trust VDH soap on a 'solo flight' though.  :D

Scent: Subtle and kind of sweet. Smells like shea butter mainly. This soap 'plays well' with Hot Six Oil and sweeter smelling shave creams. I would not advise mixing this with a mentholated shave cream like Headslick or Shave Secret Oil though. The scents seem to oppose each other.

Price: At $1.99 per puck, it's pennies over Williams Shave Soap. Quite a steal to say the least. The only complaint I have is that the VDH soap get's depleted a hell of a lot faster than Williams.

Would you buy again?: Maybe. I'm more into soaps with a prominent scent, but you can't beat the convenience and it's hard to resist the temptation of throwing a puck of VDH in your cart when doing your weekly shop at Walmart. It's also important to note that VDH sells a Premium Shave Set, that includes a shave brush, puck of soap and a soap cup for around $11. It's a great way to get started using a shave brush.

Ease of lathering - 7/10

Life span of lather - 10/10

Moisturizing - 10/10

Lubrication - 7/10

How protective? - 8/10

Scent - 6/10

Price - 10/10

Would you buy again? 9/10

Overall: 8.4/10

I have this soap.
Have not used it yet.

But just last night I put it in my wooden shave "bowl" the puck was not nearly big enough to fit the bowl.

I warmed it up in a microwave, briefly, it melted, (be careful hot liquid soap) let it cool overnight and now I have a perfect fit. Looks good I will try it in the not too distant future.
