Older country music stars

Hey SLY guys. I was just curious how many of you like some of the older country music. Mainly I mean mid to late 80's era. Here is a guy who was one of my favorites whose life was untimely cut short...the late, great Keith Whitley

Our country demands all our strength, all our energies. To resist the powerful combination now forming against us will require every man at his place. If victorious we will have everything to hope for in the future. If defeated, nothing will be left for us to live for.

You mean back when country music was actually country and not Caribbean-reggae and 80s pop/rock with a few steel guitar licks thrown in in the hope that no one will notice the difference?

Did you know that the original version of "I Never Go Around Mirrors" as recorded by Lefty Frizzell only had one verse?  Keith Whitley asked Sanger D. Schafer, the co-writer, to write a second verse because he wanted to record the song and RCA was fighting him on it because they thought it was too short.

Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, the early George Strait and Randy Travis.  All awesome.

I'm also a fan of "outlaw" country such as David Allen Coe, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson.

Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings, Loretta Lynn, T.G. Shephard, Conway Twitty, Crystal Gayle, Kenny Rogers

oh the memories.  My parents used to own a country radio station in the early 80's.  I met a lot of those folks.  Of course I was 10 or so and didn't realize WHO I was meeting.  That was when country was COUNTRY.

Is there a satellite radio service (XM, Sirius?) that has a dedicated "channel" that separates the older country music from the current?

I have Sirius and the answer is no. There is a station that plays some traditional stuff but it's not a "classic country" station.

There's classic country on the music channels on most digital cable and satellite systems.  That's what I listen to primarily.  When I'm in the mood to listen to something new, I tune into the Americana channel.  They have some stuff that I like a lot and some other stuff I'm not so crazy about.  But at least it isn't the same old junk that gets played on "Today's Country" radio, which I don't listen to at all anymore.

Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, Charlie Pride and Waylon Jennings
Glen Campbell, Dottie West, Roger Miller, Lynn Anderson, Roy Clark

I miss the old TNT {Nashville Network}. At 9 every night there was a great live show with Bob Emery featuring many old school country artists.

Rafter: I'd forgotten about that channel. You're right, they had some great performances and programming.
