I love to go fishing, but for any decent fishing around here you need to travel at least an hour sometimes more. It is a desert after all ya know. I really enjoy fly fishing, and so do a couple of the other guys here at work.

I used to love to fish when I was a kid.
Now the only fishing I do is for my olive at the bottom of my martini or the lime in my corona.

It's funny, I used to live in one of the best fly fishing places in California, if not the US, but I've never done it. I used to fish with my Grandpa and a couple of my friends, but I never really go into it. Though, I'll spend weeks climbing around a mountain to find something to shoot.

I live right in the foothills of the Rockies here in Colorado and have not been fishing since 1989 off Catalina Island.
Now that I have kids, it would be a great activity. What's the best way to break into it? I was thinking of getting the whole scoop from a local sporting goods place. Or I also thought of joining one of them beginner fishing trips where they supply the poles and instruction and all that. I realize it's not brain surgery, but I'd like to get a good "leg up" if you know what I mean.
Any advice?

finding a group would be a good idea. when i started fly fishing my best friend and i just bought rods and headed to the headwaters of the arkansas. and taught ourselves. i was working at walmart with an older gentleman who was an avid fly fisherman. he took me under his wing when he found out i had started to like it. but hey, just go get some rods and reel and take the young'uns. worst case is you don't catch much. but at least the kids will have a new hobby. and they spent the day with dad, which could give mom the day off from the rest of you. damn i sounded like dr. phil. scary.

When I was younger, we used to go hand fishing. I never caught anything, but some friends caught some pretty big catfish. One caught a muskrat. He didn't hang on to it long though.
Mostly it was an excuse to drink beer (for me anyway).
