Merkur Progress first use today
« on: September 13, 2014, 09:32:27 AM »
Well, not done a DE shave for a few months as i sold my EJ and 37 Slant. Been using a Mach 3 and my Braun series 3 Shaver.

Well, the new Progress came yesterday and i put a feather in it and started off on no:2 on the face. Nice shave. I dont really go against the grain on the face only directly under the goatee.

Then i decided to shave the head with it!

Did a couple of tentative passes on no: 2 and 3 and had to up it to no:4. Went against the grain with that too and in the end it gave me a really nice shave! No nicks or cuts or aggravation.  I think i ended up doing 5 or so passes as i have stubborn patches on my head!

So, 1 st time with the Progress and quite happy. More practice is needed though.

I used TOBS sensitive and a nice badger brush. Lather was nice. Used an Alum block and Bump Patrol to finish with some shaving balm to smooth it all over.

Is the shaver better than the EJ or the 37c? Early days i guess to say. I was very happy with the 1st shave though. Looks like, at the mo, that i still have to do quite a few passes though. Time will tell how that pans out.

Feather blade for me is the benchmark blade.

I have a progress but it mostly sits in my shave supply drawer. I've grown to prefer twist to open razors seeing as they are much easier to change blades in.

Progress is easy to change the blade. No issues there for me. Its the actual shave i am looking at. I seem to have to do so many passes! lol

I shaved my head with the Braun this morning and then finished off ATG with the Progress. As soon as i put the razor to my head i nicked myself! This is usually how i always nick myself! The initial touch of the razor! Just one tint little nick!

Did the shave though and all good otherwise.

Thing is, when i use the Mach 3 it seems so much easier as less nervousness!

Shave finish is almost equal i would say but the DE does give it a small edge.

I need tons more practice!!

Try this, hover the razor above your head so the top would be flat on it then start to angle the razor into your desired cutting angle. don't drop the razor down or apply downward pressure, that could be why you're nicking yourself.

Hi Goatee:  Congrats on getting the Progress.  I hope that you don't give up on this razor like you did with your EJ89 and 37C.
