Holy Smoke!
« on: October 17, 2006, 02:14:36 PM »
I realise this is a sensitive subject, especially for N. Americans.

But I was wondering: do you smoke?

Please vote so we can get a general idea of how many of you (the members of this forum) smoke.

Personally, yes, I do smoke. But only indoors (at home - I live alone), and I handroll my cigarettes.
So far I'm enjoying it, but I seem to be gifted when it comes to quitting, for I can quit quite easily
whenever it stops being a pleasure and starts being a liability...

Ok, keep them votes coming....

Smoked for 24 years, have quit 4 weeks, 4 days as of today.

2nd hardest thing I've ever done.

I've never smoked at all. Actually, I've never drank alcohol or done any drugs either. Never tried any of it. Most people don't believe me at first when I tell them that, but it's a personal choice. I don't care that people do. Most of my friends do and I'm cool with it. I don't give anyone a hard time. It's just not for me.

Congrats on quitting!

I've had 4 open-heart surgeries, so it's not advisable that I smoke cigs.  Though, I will enjoy a good cigar once and awhile.

Thanks for your replies and votes.

VFRWolf, since you mentioned quitting smoking as the 2nd hardest thing you've ever done, I'm curious: what was
number one?

lostnfound21: Good for you! I think it's great that there are people out there who never smoked and drank.
As for me, I don't drink either. I can't hold my liquor anyway...after the second beer I get sleepy and head for
the bed. I hope my fellow Greeks won't ever find out....hehe

Tyler: Cigars are great too - much more enjoyable than cigarettes. I've smoked them for a while, but they turned out
to be more expensive than drugs, lol. (I think Gene Hackman said that in a movie...a submarine movie, I think)
I'm sorry to hear about those heart surgeries you had. But I think you're a pretty sturdy guy and you'll probably outlive
most of us... :)

I have one of those love-hate relationships with cigarrettes... I always quit (last time was just over a month) and then for what ever reason, I start up again... then I quit again a few month later... then I start up again...

I lost my wife to breast cancer about 9 years ago, leaving me a single father.  Telling our children, then 10 and 7, that their mother was not going to be with us was by far the hardest thing I've ever done.

I re-married about 3 years later, and my kids have adjusted very well, 1 daughter in college, my son a sophmore in high school.  Both love their step mom and she's done wonders with them.  So all's good now.

Foolish me, I shouldn't have asked.
I'm sorry about your wife, that must have been very hard indeed.
But I'm glad you've managed to remarry and that things worked out in the end.

Hang loose, buddy

Doesn't bother me to talk about it, the more folks realize that it can happen to younger women too, the more that it can be caught early.

It's all good bro.

Thanks for sharing everyone, and personal condolences to VFRWolf. I have never been a cigarette smoker, since I cough nasty at the thought of trying to inhale! I do, too enjoy a good cigar now and then. I barely do now-a-days, with all my medical conditions. Thx for sharing all and great Poll Harry, me brudder!   ;)

I've never smoked a day in my life, but I used to dip snuff. That was a hard habit to break. I enjoyed it mostly when drinking, hanging with my buddies and that sorta thing. Then I started to discover it would help me stay awake when I was driving or working a 16 plus hour shift in the dairy business. I quit for a while, then started again...then quit, and started again. All without the wife knowing, she doesn't like it all that much. I've had ex-girlfriends who didn't mind, hell they did it too every now and then.

I don't view smoking the occasional cigar as qualification to be a smoker.  At least I hope not, then I would have to change my vote, too.
