I was just thinking about when I was younger and realised that I would lose most of my hair by the time I was 35, I thought that I would maybe buzz my head or get hair transplants when I had to. Basically buzz my head around the bald patches 

In the last 1/2 year to year Ive now realised that Im going to shave my head before that day comes(when I have to).


I was just wondering what everyone else thought they would do when they were older to deal with hairloss (as when you were young Im sure you didnt think about shaving). Maybe grow it out like Jack Nicholson!!

I've been balding since my 20s and always knew i'd look like my dad, grandad etc etc.  Basically I just accepted that and never considered transplants or any other such alternatives.  I never planned to do anything about it, all I did was to trim it to make it look less dorky and now of course I shave it.

After 8th grade biology and learning that I would most likely go bald based on my genetics, I vowed that I would shave my head at that point.  I actually shaved a year or two ahead of schedule.

I never thought much about when it might happen, but I always said if it got too bad, it was all coming off.  I refused to look like a fool, at least as far as my hair was concerned.

I didn't really know ahead of time that I was going to go bald.  I never knew any of the men on my mom's side of the family and everyone on dad's side had all their hair.  I always did say that I didnt' understand why people went through so much trouble to try to grow something back though.  That attitude made it easier to whip out the razor when I noticed the patch of skin getting bigger at my crown.

I remember thinking when I was a kid I hope it doesn't happen to me (I was adopted so didn't have any info about family traits) but I just assumed that it was something that happened to men in middle age which seemed like such a long way away that it didn't require too much worrying about, (sigh) the niavity of youth eh?  Little did I realise that it would strike in my early twenties! When I first started losing it some people said "oh, it's probably just receding a bit & will go so far & then stop" so I clung to that hope for a while, when it became obvious that that wasn't the case I hoped that perhaps a miracle cure might soon be found    but as I lost more & more so I kept cutting it shorter & shorter until, inevitably, I came to know the joys of going SLY! Having the mad prof look of lots of hair around the sides & none on top was just never an option as far as I was concerned !!!

I never really worried about it too much because I started shaving my hair down with clippers using a 1/4 and some times 1/8 inch guard back in high school like when I was 16 before I started thinning.  So I just figured what the hell if it happens...I'm already bald by shaving so I'll just keep shaving or go lower, which I did.

Basically I've always thought that I would never go bald. My dad had a full head of hair at 55 yr (now he's thinning quite fast but it usually comes with that age, he's 60 now) and of course I didn't realize that it could be inherited from the mothers side. The thing is, my mothers father was way receded when he was around 30 (we don't have many pictures of him and he died around the time when I was born so I don't remember him). Last year when my barber told me I was thinning, it all seemed so obvious. My mother has very thin hair (in the same pattern I'm thinning) and my mother's father receded young, and worst of all I certainly look like them and have their hair colour and type. So it only struck me a year ago that I will be bald in a couple of years (and I was only 23 for f**k's sake). Well I thought the meds (finasteride mostly) was going to slow down the inevitable enough for me to get used to the idea, but no... I've used it for a year and it hasn't done anything. Me and my twin bro are both thin as f**k at 24. I'm still crushed but I've always thought that buzzing close/shaving is the only way of dealing with balding if it has gone too far.

my grandpa , 2 uncles, my older brother..was bald...runs on my mothers side... i knew i didnt have a snowballs chance in hell.....i never even considered drugs or toupees or tranplants...i wore a horseshoe for 12 yrs until even the HORSESHOE started thinning on the sides  i knew that shaving it was my only option left, thanks to this site i was able to do it

I started to bald at a very young age...and i had my denial stage where i just didnt want to accept it...than came my fantasy stage = believing some miracle lotion/shampoo would be invented that would help me regain my lost hair (I was in high school, so i think the fantasy was justified )...well that ended fast and came to a realization to accept it...

But to answer your question fully, i was really hoping that by the time i get to the hardcore balding stage, some miracle growth would be on the market. Denial at its best i guess.

My dad has a full head of hair - in his late 70's.  His brother had a thinnning dome.  Mom had no brothers but her dad had thin hair and all of her uncles (on her Mom's side) had thinning hair or were MPB.  I get it naturally.  I only have one sibling - and she has a full head of hair!

My Grandfathers were bald.  My Dad had some thinning at 51 when he passed away.  I guess it skipped a generation.  I started thinning in my late 20s and had a pretty wide landing strip 45.  I been SLY for 2 months and wonder what took so long.

There is No hair loss on either side of my family.  Both of my grandfathers passed away with full heads of hair and my father and brother both have all of theirs.  I guess I'm starting a new tradition.  But I does have to start somewhere with every family.  My wife's side is almost all bald.  Maybe I got it from my in-laws.

BTW.  This weekend will be the first time that I've seen my family since going SLY.  Wondering what their reactions will be.  It was my dad that always brought up my balding.  Wait till he sees me now.
