New here
« on: October 06, 2012, 02:42:05 PM »
Hi everyone.  I have been a lurker here for a while and just thought I would post and say hi.  My hair has been thinning for the last several years, but I have only been losing it faster for the last few.

For the past four years I have been using a hair product called X-Fusion which helps cover up the thinning spots.  It is keratin protein that mimics hair and binds to your existing hairs.    The product actually works amazing, but over time especially the past year or two I have been having to use a lot of the product.   And even spray it directly on my scalp which is not how you are supposed to use it.  Well finally it got to the point where the product was easy to mess up and you would see real small parts of my scalp.

I just got sick of it and did some research.  Some of my research led me to this forum and some other websites.  I finally settled on getting a buzz cut.  I was looking at a guard 2 cut but my hair stylist talked me into a 4 on top and 2 on the sides and back.  When I got it cut while I liked the sides and back I was shocked about the top.  It really showed my thinning probably slightly more then the longer hair.  I was hoping that it would help blend the thinning like I was reading it would.  She recommended that I grow the top to an 8 and keep the side cut at a 2.

So I left disappointed and was afraid what my wife was going to say.  She was actually very supportive and said that she was ok with it.  This all happened on Monday.  Flash forward to Thursday and I told my wife that I wanted to cut it to a 2 all over like I originally wanted.  My wife said that it looked better and I agreed.  Right away after I looked at it, I was like what the heck lets try a 1.  So we did and she was "like this is really short I am not sure if you are going to like this haircut".  So I was worried but you know what it was not bad.

I think that it helps conceal my thinning even better then a 2 and I personally think that I have a pretty good head shape to pull it off.   But I will let you guys be the judge of that.  It is shorter then I thought it would be even though I looked at a lot of pictures of a 1 buzz cut.  Maybe it is because it is on my head and not someone else ;).  I am not sure if I am going to keep it at a 1 or let it grow to a 2.  While I think that it looks pretty good on me I am having a hard time getting totally used to it.  And a 2 cut was not as shocking to me so I may grow it out to a 2 and leave it.  Eventually when I thin out much more i will go Sly.

Sorry if I rambled on in my story and let me know what you guys think.  Take care.

It was time--you're on the right track & if you've been lurking you know what the advice is going to be.  Can you do it before it's suggested?  Let tomorrow be your Slick & Sly Sunday!

The bottom photo is a 100% better look and most on this site will suggest you will look even beter sly.  Go for it - you have your wife's support.

Looks great!! I think you made a good decision going lower. As time goes by, you will get more and more comfortable. It's funny how much you can grow into a new look!

Welcome and shave it and getter done.  Think of all that oily stuff you had on your topknot. ;)

Shaved instead of buzzed would probably be better for you.

Welcome mate, the buzzed look certainly does suit you! I have no doubt that sly will look just as good if not better on you, why wait for you to thin out even more before you go sly, you will only be kicking yourself later. I don't know of anyone that hasn't wished they went sly sooner  O0 Having said that, you'll know when the time is right for you, so if you are enjoying the #1 for now, then sick with it, and maybe even try the no guard later on to see if you like that, but once you try that you might as well be full sly :D... now I feel like I am rambling.

Welcome Kevin!

The #1 buzz looks great. Maybe try a no guard, see what happens, it can't hurt.

Thanks for all the encouragement and welcomes guys.   Monday was the first time that I ever buzzed my hair, so this is a big change for me.  Still feels kind of odd  even though I like it for the most part.  How long did it take all of you guys to get used to your new look when you buzzed or shaved your head for the first time?

Oh as a side note my 18 year old daughter just told me that she likes my new hairstyle which made me feel pretty good  ;).

Glad to hear she likes it, she has every reason too, you look great!

Hrmm, I'd say it took me a week or 2 to get over the confusion of not having any hair to rub my hands through. But I feel in love with the feeling of a slick dome almost instantly, and haven't looked back since  O0
