The Packers perfect season is over! Probably good that they lost to KC, a losing team. KC played inspired football and the Pack just seemed flat. Being a Bears fan in northern Wisconsin can be difficult but it also has the benefit of allowing me to switch allegiances with no one noticing. More on the Bears later. KC played great defense, particularly their secondary, allowing their D-Line to sack Rodgers multiple times and rush him into less-than Rodgers type throws.
The Broncos got shown what class is as the Pats walked into Mile High and came from behind to bring Denver back to reality. They pressured Tebow, forced turnovers, and generally kept the Broncos rocked back on their heels. Brady showed Tebow some of the qualities of a seasoned NFL QB. Denver maintains a 1 game lead in the AFC West and I, for one, hope that they make it into the playoffs (no offense Schro!). More on this to follow.
I think the Bears are done.....like stick a fork in them! I think this is good for a couple of reasons. The Bears need a back-up QB that can NOT throw picks to a defensive end who then returns them for 6. If I'm not mistaken Hanie did this in the playoffs last year. Maybe they can pick up a decent back-up in the off-season. But there's more to it than that for me. This whole Sam Hurd thing has got me wondering about the NFL all over again. You know, when all the labor crap was going on I had a discussion with a buddy of mine about the greed expressed on both sides. His response was that he was with the players, they get limited to a 3 year $400,000 a year contract as rookies (I don't know if that's true or not) and a lot of times they have short careers either because of injury or lack of NFL-type talent. My response was that aside from the fact that they make more money in 3 years of playing football than many people make "workin' for the man" for 20 years they also got 4 year full boat scholarships to accredited universities. If they didn't utilize those 4 years actually learning how to do something beside play football does that mean I am supposed to believe that they are actually oppressed? But the Sam Hurd thing plays into this for me. Sam Hurd was with the Cowboys for 5 years before coming to the Bears so he was out of that rookie contract stage. This guy was making some real money! And then he tries to negotiate with a Federal Agent and a confidential informant a drug deal that would effectively make him THE BIGGEST DRUG DEALER IN THE CITY OF CHICAGO? The city where I was a cop, Waukegan, IL, is about 40 miles north of Chicago. We had BIG drug dealers there, they could buy houses with cash and set them up as part of their network. They drove around in Benzes and Beemers and all kinds of luxury and they were totally insulated in most cases because of the way their operations were set up. But they were NOT Chicago drug lords. Those guys are enormous. They feed the dealers in towns like Waukegan in a lot of cases. And Sam Hurd, who had been in the NFL for more than 5 years, wanted to be the biggest of the big? WTF for? I just don't get it. Do these guys NEVER have enough? I realize that not all the players are into this $h!t but on ESPN this week there was a commentary about a whole bunch of them that got real nervous when Hurd's arrest went public and they were hoping that he wasn't going to talk too much.
Now there are extremes of all types in pro sports from Sam Hurd to Tim Tebow. But I sure don't hold it against Tim Tebow that he prays on the football field! And if I had a son who wanted to play football is there any question who I would want him to emulate?
It was fun seeing the packers lose.
No comment on the Bears and Hurd...I find it hard to say anything with this bag over my head...
The worst part about this Bears season is the fact that we were playing so well with Cutler and Forte healthy. It looked like we were going to get the wild card rather easily. Possibly a chance at a run in the playoffs and giving the Packers a solid game. Very heartbreaking season.
