Ward's Reviews - Headblade Headshed
« on: May 31, 2009, 09:46:13 PM »
Arguably the standard in Pre-shave products for most of us Sly Bald Guys. Here's what I think.

Scent

Delicious! I would eat this stuff if I could (not a good idea though, trust me).
A combination of cookie dough and cocoa butter make this a heavenly scent that never gets old.

Texture

Headshed has a very sandy texture to it. The 'sand' is actually finely ground walnut shells. The mixture is slightly runny, which makes it easy to rub in and exfoliate your head. No complaints here!

Ingredients

Headshed is mainly comprised of natural ingredients, with some artificial ingredients. Looking closely, some highlights are: walnut, shea butter, grape seed extract and beeswax. Quite simple compared to other pre-shave products I've used. My only gripe is that there are no ingredients specifically included to 'wash' your head. Enter Headwash.

Performance

Fantastic. This will certainly do the job in exfoliating your scalp in preparation for a smooth shave. Sometimes you wonder if certain 'exfoliators' are really working. Headblade takes any guess work out and you can feel it working. Used daily, some people might find the mixture a bit harsh. However, Headblade only recommends using it 'a few times a week'. Read the directions! Personally, I can use it daily without any problems. Also, the added cocoa butter keeps your head from drying out after exfoliating.

Price and Packaging

At $9 for an 8oz tube, it's an amazing deal. A single bottle can last for months depending on frequency of use.

Final Thoughts and Gripes

This should be a no-brainer. Headshed is an amazing product at an unbeatable price. It has simple ingredients and does what it's supposed to do; exfoliate! While it might be a little more harsh on the scalp compared to other products on the market and doesn't have as many 'bells and whistles' (ingredients), you can guarantee you're getting the prep your head needs for a fantastic shave. My only gripe is that there are no specific 'cleaning' ingredients. To get the 'whole package', you also have to buy Headblade Headwash. Overall though, Headshed will certainly remain a mainstay in my shave regimen.

I think walnut shells are to hard/rough for exfoliating with.
If you could sample your skin under a microscope after using sucha  harsh exf. product you would fine your skin is literally scratched up.

Might be more so for us sensitive skin types, but after one use of HS I won't be using it again.

Even a milder exf product I would not use on the scalp more than once a week absolutely no more than every 5th day. I tried a one today that was much less harsh than walnut shells.

Showering everyday with  a bald head, the head just doesn't need so much scrubbing. Most of the time simply hot water and a washcloth is all I need. The once or maybe twice a week (especially if I am extra dirty) I actually "wash" my scalp.

Again, the sensitive skin types might find things a lot different than those with tougher hides.  :*))

FWIW,
Eric

Great review!  I use head wash on a daily basis and throw the head shed in the mix every couple of days.  I have sensitive skin too, but so far so good.  I would definately recommend this product. O0
