Hi guys, im back :)
« on: May 06, 2009, 06:09:19 AM »
Hey guys I'm back again. For those who dont know my i'm Outsider from Sydney Australia.

I started shaving my head in September of 2007. I started out being sly for a while but off and on I would let my hair grow out a little because i would be lazy about shaving.

Fast forward to 2009, in January I decided to keep my hair shaved with clippers at a zero. My parents persistently tell me to this day that they want my hair to be grown out. So May 2009 remember my mates at SBG and come to you with some advice, I want to go back to the old days of Sly.

How do I deal with this? I know you're all going to say you should do what is right for yourself and shave it again. But, I'm in a tricky position I moved back to my parents house in order to save some money to buy a house. I dont want to piss my parents off because it would make my life a living hell while im here.

How do you suggest I go about getting my parents to lay off the complaints?

Out :)

PS. Sly is becoming more popular these days in Sydney :) great to see.

Thats at tough one outsider.  We are brought up to respect and obey our parents.  I know you are living with your parents and you are the "guest" so to speak.   I just feel taht you are old enough to make your own decisions and they should as well respect that.  I could understand if you were a drug user, an alcoholic or just bringing your dates home with you all the time and they were against that.  This is your hair, I just do not understand some folks at times.  Funny thing is I have never heard a word of acceptance or dislike from my parents.  I do not live at home, but I half way at least expected my Dad to say something to me.  He has never brought it up at all.  My Mom just says, well thats Tim for ya.

I wish you luck with this and do what you feel you need to do.

Good Luck

Are you shaving because of MPB or are you Bald By Choice?  That could make a big difference.

If you're losing your hair and your shaving because of baldness, you can play the sympathy card.  Tell them that you're self conscious about your MPB and that shaving your head makes you feel better about yourself.  Tell them that the Sly look gives you more confidence and you really feel like it has helped you to be yourself.

After that, there is no way that they can say a negative word.

Welcome back Outsider!

You're an adult so talk to your folks like an adult and explain exactly what Brother Bem said above.

I shave as a mix of by choice and the onset of MPB. I know i'm slowly going bald but its not at a point that it looks crap and shaving would suit much better. I do however like the sly look not to mention the feel of it. I do find myself concerned about the MPB when i see myself in the mirror.

My Dad's opinion of it is "i like you with hair, why don't you grow it out while you still can."

Other times when i've been lazy and let it grow out to a number 1 (or there abouts) my mum will say, ohh growing your hair back i see. Or the typical quote, you look so much better with hair.

I'll post up some recent pics  in the "Just checking in" section of the forum.

Great to see ya back Outsider.   Mike hit it right on the head, as an adult you have to make the decisions that make YOU happy.  Explain to your parents that they raised you to stand on your own two feet and to make your own decisions.  Going sly is one of those decisions.

Hey guys,

Im not going to be chickening out on re-claiming my sly'ness. One quick question for the group, should i have my little chat with my parents prior to shaving it or after? Im just nervous about it.

No.  They'll just try to talk you out of it.  There will be plenty of time to talk about it afterwards.

Definitely afterwards.  It can make for a great opening line...."You can see I shaved again.   It's important to me because......."

Hey guys

I went to bed last night with every intention of shaving in the morning. This morning comes and so I chicken out. I'm stressing over what others will say. Can I add that last time I was slickbald what I would do is, if I knew I was going to be seeing my parents, I would hold off from shaving. I thought in my mind that they wouldn't care as much if I had a little hair up top. So the only time my mum and dad ever saw my sly was once when we were out to dinner.

I'm writing this while I'm on the train to work. This morning I found myself thinking about how I could shave and sneak out and not let them see till the evening but by the time I got up it was too late to shave.

I just noticed that I still have my shaving gear in my work bag from when I picked them up after work on Friday.

Sorry to rant but I needed to get that out. You guys are fantastic. I'll be sly soon enough.

Shave first, talk later.  It is easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

Exactly.  You know it's just a matter of time before you do it, so just put yourself out of your misery and do it.  Once the sly bug bites you, you will know no peace until your head is smooth and stubble-free.  Your parents will accept it.  It may take a little time, but eventually they will -- but only if you shave that head and stick with it no matter what.  If you go back and forth, you'll get grief every single time.  Been there, done that.

Well I did the bold move and went sly this morning before work. So far no one has said anything but i don't expect to.

My Parents haven't seen yet but no doubt they will once i get home.  ;D

Love the feel of it. I got a bit of razor burn but thats probably normal.

Yay  O:O
