For those of you who have been storing your blades/razors in olive oil for a lengthy period of time now, is there an "unofficial" time frame by which the oil should be replaced?
I been changing mine every month.I guess that might be the way to go.
Even though I rinse my blades throughly before storing them back in the oil, and the oil looks clean,I was thinking that it may be wise to change the oil once a month or so to avoid any chance of microscopic bacteria build-up that we could be, unknowingly, transferring from the oil to our scalps (especially if we nick ourselves).
Has this thought crossed anyone else's mind?

Thanks, Tank... I don't remember seeing any postings on this issue, but wanted to bring it up, so that others can remember to incorporate this "scheduled oil change" into their routine....

Olive Oil has not made much of a difference for my Mach 3 blades.
Before putting my Mach 3 blades in olive oil they would each last 4 shaves (I shave every 3 days). Now they last 6 shaves.
I am trying Fusion now and I will see how that goes. I don't know where things went wrong.
It was extra virgin olive oil.

I don't think you did anything wrong MathGuy!
My results were: I normally can get 8 to 10 shaves on my Gillette Fusion Power. I put on a new blade and began placing the blades in EVOO to see what I would end up with. Well I was rolling pretty good and then one day I had some razor burn. I didn't think too much of it, gave the head a days rest and tried again. Still razor burn! So I really tried to figure it out. On the third day I put in a new blade and presto, the burn was gone.
So for me I made it to the 17th shave before I had to put in a new blade. That's pretty good but not impressive for me to stick with it. Reasons? The mess, the fear of the dang glass of oil would get knocked over in the medicine chest. Minor things. So end result, it doubled my shave numbers! But I'm just going back to buying blades more often! -

Hey Gary, thanks for sharing that. I am disappointed because Tank used to get one week for each blade, but
with the olive oil thing it increased to 8 week!! (I believe he shaves everyday)
So I was expecting mine to go as far as 8 shaves. That would be nice.
Based on my experience, I would not recommend anyone to put mach 3 blades in olive oil. You may
regret it like I did. The blade will not glide as well as before. With fusion I think it will be different because the blades are closer to each other (schick extreme 3 disposable razors, for example, work better for me when they have been put in olive oil for a few days).
I will put my fusion blade in olive oil and see how that goes. -

Math Guy, It's all so personal. You may not like the Fusion. For me, nothing else even compares. Not even the Mach III that I had used on my head for years. To each his own!

I use a fusion blade.It`s the only blade that I will use on my head.Everything is not for everybody.I`M shocked it works as good as it has for me.I enjoy shaving but I was spending to much money,trying all the different products.I got a nice setup now,I`M getting a nice shave and saving some money.If it doesn`t work for you.There are tons of products out there,something will work.

Hey Tank, I didn't say that it didn't work. I got twice the number of shaves over what I normally get. I just decided to pay the price of a new Fusion blade over saving some money. If I need to save some money I will certainly return to the EVOO!

Ok Alright, I just had my second shave with Fusion. I have to tell you................I love this thing.
Somehow with Fusion the blade had little difficulty gliding over my dome. I love this.
I wish I had tried Fusion much sooner. I don't know how many shaves I will get with Fusion + olive oil but I know that I have discovered something special (i.e. Fusion).
Previously I was a little afraid trying fusion because of 4 blades, plus some members here said the blades are very sharp.
The last time I bought 5 mach 3 blades I received one Fusion for free so I thought why not buy this package and give it a try?
In summary, it seems that if the blades on your razor are closer then olive oil will not affect the "gliding" in a negative way. (personal experience of course) -

For those Sly Guys who are not too crazy about soaking your blades in olive oil, but want the scalp benefits, here's an alternative that you may like:
As I have said many times in my posts, I'm always one for experimentation with variations in my shaving routine with the goal of making the ultimate shaving experience better and better. Even though I do soak my blades in olive oil when home, this weekend I am in Gulf Shores, Alabama, giving the wife and kids a break from the rat race back home, and knew I had to make some type of slight variation to my regular routine IF I wanted to keep sly while on my weekend get-a-way!!
Here's what I decided to do, and it seems to be working out Extremely Well....
Instead of hauling my container of olive oil with me, I had an empty spare bottle of HeadWash@ home that I filled with olive oil (btw - these bottles, once empty make a great dispenser for either Witch Hazel, Olive Oil, etc. due to the pop-up top dispenser and the bottle size is ideal for traveling purposes)
Anyway, I start off by wetting my head with hot water, then a mix a bit of the olive oil with a dab of St Ives Apricot Scrub. I use this as an undercoat to my shaving gel. Something about the combination gives me the ultimate of ultimates razor glide with absolutely NO razor drag whatsoever. Even after the initial rinse or a secondary scrub, the olive oil base leaves my head with that "bone close" shave, well moisturized (but not greasy-looking) feel and appearance that just screams "touch me"!!
I have had many compliments from other Sly Guys here at the hotel, asking me how I achieve the results I get - guys that are currently either in the beginning stages of their "sly-dom" or those who have been at it a while, but still searching for that "golden moment" when they know they have discovered "nirvana" - and us "sly veterans" know the type of feeling that I'm talking about here - when everything falls just right - from the start of your shave routine to that very last pass with the razor giving you the shave of shaves....
Naturally, I passed on info about our community here on the web, and I encouraged them to logon and take a look at the valuable info shared here...Hopefully they take a look-see and come aboard...
Kids are just waking up, so I guess it's back to the beach for now....

For a long term update on the olive oil:
I've been soaking my blades in Olive oil since April, and it's now mid-November.
I'm still soaking the blade in the oil between shaves and using an oil undercoat to great results. I've been using the same Mach 3 razor heads for two months or longer. This has saved alot of money on blades, and probably on shaving gel too because I've been re-applying it alot less since the olive oil provides all the lubrication I need. -

Wow two months on one blade? Thats awesome. I know I have went for about 3 weeks or so on one blade. Especially the blade that came with my Headblade when I purchased it...that damn think lasted for ever, at least 2 months as well. People thought I was nuts, but I didnt do anythign different other than rinsing it off and turning the head blad up side on the shelf to let it air dry.
Would you like cream or sugar???
