Buzz is the word. At that age, he'll get plenty of feedback from his friends (hopefully more "+" than "-")

Welcome to our site. As for your 8 year old son, I wouldn't let him shave it,,,,I would maybe buzz it to a nice crewcut,,,,,depending on how long his hair is now. Good Luck.
