Hello everyone I'm a newbie
« on: January 30, 2007, 02:55:22 AM »
I just registered here. I have a full head of long hair which I wear in a ponytail. In 45 days I'm donating my hair to Wigs For Kids after which my head will be shaved to raise funds for childhood cancer research.

I haven't come to fully accept my impending baldness. While I know by going bald I'm helping children I still am uneasy about having a bald head.

That's why I joined this forum. I hope among other things I can learn to shave my head properly and that some of the moxie of the proud bald members here rubs off on me. Sorry for being so long winded :)

Welcome Bronco!!  That is an awesome thing that you're doing.  If you don't mind, can you post up some more information about Wigs for Kids?  I know of a similar organization called St. Baldricks, but have never heard of Wigs for Kids.

First, welcome dude, and enjoy the site, it rocks.    Second, great cause you are doing this for, very admirable of you.

As far as being uneasy, it's natural.   We all went through it, and there are times all of us nitpick it to death in a mirror/by creating a mental image of how it should look and it not matching up.   I promise you I do.

But the thing to remember is that your eyes and smile are dominant now(and boy it becomes easy to smile) and trust me on this, try rubbing your head after you get it smooth.    No feeling in the world like it, it's that good.   Lastly, just wait until you start getting into the cold shower routine after shaving, that also feels really good.   It's cold but you don't really feel it as the water runs down the head.    Great, great feeling.

Thank you all for your kind words. And yes Tyler, sure I can post more information. The organization that I am shaving to raise funds for is St. Baldrick's. This link will provide more information and show a picture of what my hair looks like now: http://www.stbaldricks.org/participants/shavee_info.html?ShaveeID=1773#

The reason I chose Wigs For Kids to donate my hair to is because it has a lot of grey in it. The person I spoke with at WFK assured me that is fine. They dye grey hair and make wigs for children with platinum blonde hair.

I get a free haircut from participating salons that collect hair for WFK. After that I'll need to get my head shaved either at a barber shop ( haven't been in one of those in years  :o ) or take a crack at doing it myself.

I've read a couple posts here and there about the headblade. Can a newbie manage one of those for a first shave?  :/O

Hi and a most hearty welcome Bronco!

You da man for donating your hair and then the shave for St. Baldricks!!

On the shaving aspects, you're going to get different viewpoints on different products around here.  Some use an electric, some use a normal razor (mach 3 or fusion), and some use the headblade.

I use the headblade, but started using it about 9 months after I started shaving.  The first few times using it can be kind of weird, but most people get the hang of it rather quickly.  The headblade website has a great instructional video! www.headblade.com

Thanks for signing up and looking forward to talking with you more on your donation and causes!

Bronco, welcome first and foremost and my hat's off to you for donating your hair to Wigs For Kids. My dad did something similar after my son was diagnosed with cancer, and I did a St Baldrick's event.

Any questions you have about shaving or what to use can be answered here, and then some. I started out using a Mach 3 but switched to the HeadBlade after about a month. In my opinion it gives an overall better shave than anything else. You'll find many opinions on razors and what gives the best shave. But that is what makes this site wonderful, many varied opinions, talents and personalities.

:) Dear Bronco: Let me add my welcome and admiration for your generosity toward sick kids. Before you shave, you'll have to have a barber take it down with an electric clippers--using a #1 guard or no guard. The razor cannot cope even with a long buzz cut. Do it slowly, after taking a long hot shower to soften the hair shafts. I also recommend a good gel, to help the razor glide without nicking (e.g. Aveeno Therapeutic). You may be shocked by your new image, but you'll soon learn there are several advantages to being totally bald. If you live in a cold climate, you should buy a couple of knitted caps and hats, as the dome really suffers in winter--the only downside. I started shaving in November, after equivocating for quite a while. With every passing day the impulse to regrow hair diminishes and I'll remain bald for the foreseeable future. You'll find a lot of support on this website and in contemporary culture, which has increasingly accepted the shaved male head, even for romantic and action heroes. Send us a before and after photo and some observations after taking the plunge. Professor Melon

Thanks for the welcome everyone. My wife got me a free fushion razor sent through the mail so I'll give that a try when the time comes.

I haven't been to the headblade website though I've read a few reviews on it. I found one ( headblade) in my local pharmacy for $12.99 . It seemed like a lot of money for the tiny piece of plastic it is.

I also was pricing the King of shaves oil and fushion shave gel. I'm leaning towards the fushion shave gel because (as usual) my wife has a coupon for it.  Doesn't matter what you name. Give her enough time and that women can fish you up a coupon for just about anything.

Sounds like the $12.99 razor you're speaking of is the HeadBlade Sport. Not a bad price, because on their site it's $15

welcome and i know of many people who donate there hair just like you ...being you have a wife I am sure you trust.....this is just my take on this...I bought Salon certified Balding clippers By WAHL..it has a 6x0 surgical blade...I paid 45 dollars for them ...you can get these and cut your hair yourself at home instead of going to a barber...plus they get the hair short enough to use a razor after or not if that is your choice...just a thought O0 (**!

You the man Bronco.  My hat goes off to you for helping out kids.  I saw, recently, a kid undergoing chemo.  He had lost all his hair, eyelashes and eyebrows.  Seemed really self-conscious.  Guys like you can really help out.
